Digital Tools & Student Data Privacy
Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation uses a variety of digital tools to support teaching, learning, communication, and school operations. We are committed to protecting student data and ensuring all platforms comply with federal and state privacy laws, including FERPA and COPPA.
All vendors listed below are reviewed by the district and agreements are reviewed to confirm that the platform restricts the use of student data to educational purposes only.
Core District Platforms
Google Workspace for Education
Grades: K–12
Purpose:
Google Workspace is used for classroom collaboration, communication, and productivity. Students use tools such as Docs, Drive, Gmail, and Slides to complete assignments and interact with teachers.
Data Shared (may include):
- Student name
- School email address
- Student ID
- Class enrollment information
- Files and content created by the student
How Accounts Are Created:
Accounts are securely created and managed by the district through Google Workspace.
Privacy & Security:
Google Workspace for Education is FERPA compliant and does not use student data for advertising purposes.
Canvas (Learning Management System)
Grades: K–12
Purpose:
Canvas is the district’s learning management system (LMS), used to organize coursework, deliver assignments, track grades, and facilitate communication between students and teachers.
Data Shared (may include):
- Student name
- School email address
- Student ID
- Course enrollment
- Assignment submissions and grades
How Accounts Are Created:
Accounts are automatically provisioned through secure integration with district systems.
Privacy & Security:
Canvas is FERPA compliant and uses student data only to provide educational services.
Skyward (Student Information System)
Grades: K–12
Purpose:
Skyward is the district’s official student information system (SIS). It is used to manage student records, including enrollment, attendance, grades, schedules, and family contact information.
Data Shared (may include):
- Student demographic information
- Attendance records
- Grades and transcripts
- Parent/guardian contact information
- Emergency contact details
How Accounts Are Created:
Accounts are created and maintained internally by the district.
Privacy & Security:
Skyward is FERPA compliant and serves as the authoritative source for student data within the district.
ParentSquare (Communication Platform)
Grades: K–12
Purpose:
ParentSquare is used for school-to-home communication, including announcements, alerts, newsletters, and direct messaging between families and staff.
Data Shared (may include):
- Student name
- Parent/guardian names and contact information
- School and classroom affiliations
How Accounts Are Created:
Accounts are automatically generated using information from the district’s student information system.
Privacy & Security:
ParentSquare is FERPA compliant and uses data solely for school communication purposes.
SchoolCare (Health & Clinic Management System)
Grades: K–12
Purpose:
SchoolCare is used by school nurses and authorized staff to manage student health records, including clinic visits, medications, immunizations, and health-related documentation.
Data Shared (may include):
- Student name
- Date of birth
- Health and medical information
- Immunization records
- Emergency and guardian contact information
How Accounts Are Created:
Accounts are automatically provisioned through secure integration with district systems. Accounts are managed by authorized district personnel with restricted access based on role.
Privacy & Security:
SchoolCare data is protected under FERPA and applicable student health privacy laws. Access is limited to authorized personnel with a legitimate educational interest.
