Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone in high school athletics: Girls’ Basketball Head Coach Julie Shelton has achieved her 400th career win, and more specifically, all are at Mt. Vernon High School.
Shelton is now one of only 12 girls’ basketball coaches in Indiana history to reach 400 wins. Across both girls’ and boys’ programs, only 31 coaches in the state have ever earned this distinction. Over her 24 full seasons, plus one game into her 25th, she has averaged 16 wins per year.
Shelton was recognized during the November Board of Trustees meeting, where Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker praised her outstanding honor. “She's achieved such an amazing accomplishment. We're incredibly proud of you. You are an honor to work with and an honor to see you coach and your girls play,” Parker said.
For Shelton, the achievement represents more than a number. “Probably more important than the 400 wins is that very few people get them all at one place, and that's the piece that makes me the most proud,” she shared. “It's hard to stay at one place, but it hasn't been hard to stay here. This has been an amazing community that has let me be me, and I'm very proud to be a Marauder.”
Coach Shelton’s dedication, leadership, and commitment continue to make her an invaluable member of the MV community and an inspiring example for student-athletes.
MVCSC Celebrates Statewide Honor for Assistant Food Director Kasey Pasyk
Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is proud to celebrate an outstanding achievement within its Food Services Department. Assistant Food Services Director Kasey Pasyk has been named Assistant Director of the Year by the Indiana School Nutrition Association (ISNA).
Pasyk was nominated by Food Services Director Doris Johnson, who highlighted Kasey’s exceptional dedication in her nomination. “Kasey is a true school nutrition hero,” Johnson shared. “We are lucky to have her unique combination of professional dedication, business expertise, creativity, personal development, and a deep care for the nutrition and wellness of our students and staff.”
This honor recognizes Pasyk for consistently going above and beyond in the district, as well as meeting several criteria, including:
- Maintaining at least three years of ISNA/School Nutrition Association (SNA) membership
- Holding an SNS Credential or completing 20 hours of training
- Demonstrating strong involvement and leadership within school food service programs
She was recognized for her achievements at the ISNA Annual Conference this fall and will also be recognized at the December Board of Trustees meeting.
Pasyk says the most rewarding part of her work is knowing the impact she makes each day. “I love that we can make a difference in kids’ lives without them ever realizing,” she said. “Knowing that the meals we’re serving students could be the only meals they’re receiving—and that those meals are healthy—is rewarding in and of itself.”
Beyond overseeing nutrition, Pasyk also visits classrooms and student clubs to educate students on the importance of nutrition and wellness, while gathering feedback on the meals served. She volunteers at community events as well, helping community members understand school nutrition standards.
“Not everyone realizes that the food the school serves is different from what you buy in grocery stores,” Pasyk explained. “Our meals include whole grains, low-fat, and low-sodium ingredients. We follow the federal regulations and Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are science-based and include specific rules and regulations.”
Pasyk’s dedication, leadership, and daily commitment to supporting the MV community continue to set a powerful example for others and positively impact students across the district.
