Harnessing Hope: MVHS Students Explore Learning Through Equine Experiences
Students at Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) recently had a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences during a visit from Harnessing Hope Therapeutic Riding and Driving. With the generosity of the Weil Foundation, MVHS received grant funding in partnership with the Harnessing Hope organization to provide interactive sessions that combine equine-assisted activities with lessons in observation, communication, and teamwork.
Throughout the day, students took part in hands-on experiences such as brushing, walking, and spending calm, focused time with the horses. These activities helped students explore how body language, patience, and mutual trust play a role in effective communication. By comparing the horses’ reactions and stress responses to their own, students gained a deeper understanding of how behavior and environment can influence interactions.
“It's a pleasure and privilege to share our horses and mission with others,” shared English teacher Dana Hilgert, who helped to secure the grant. “It has truly made a difference for the students, as they saw that they can overcome obstacles, they practiced their English skills as they shared stories about horses from their home countries, and so much more! They saw what they were capable of and gained information that they can utilize in various aspects of their lives.”
Many students found connections between their experiences with the horses and topics they’ve discussed in class, such as nonverbal communication, cooperation, and the importance of focus and consistency.
One student shared how the experience made a lasting impression:
“I was really stressed out before going to meet with the horses and didn’t think that they would do anything to help, but I was so wrong. Just being around them and getting a chance to brush and touch them took away all of that stress. I really appreciate that I was able to have this experience, and I will definitely be doing the horse breathing when I’m stressed out or just need to take a breath.”
For many, the visit was more than just a hands-on learning opportunity; it was a chance to practice patience, gain confidence, and see communication in a new light.
By the end of the day, students walked away with lessons that reached far beyond the classroom — a touching reminder that meaningful lessons can also come from those with four legs and a gentle spirit.
