Hancock County, Indiana...Growing Fast!
Hancock County is a county located in Indiana just east of Indianapolis. As of 2024, the population has grown by 3.1% to 88,810. The county seat is Greenfield.
Towns
There are five main towns in the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation boundaries. They consist of:
- Fortville - Fortville is a town in Vernon Township, Hancock County. The population was 4,808 at the 2020 census.
- McCordsville - McCordsville is a town in Vernon Township, Hancock County. The population was 8,878 at the 2020 census.
- Mt. Comfort - Mt. Comfort is an unincorporated community in Buck Creek Township, Hancock County.
- Mohawk - Mohawk is an unincorporated community in Buck Creek Township, Hancock County.
- Cumberland - Part of Cumberland is located in the southwest corner of the Mt. Vernon District.
Community Foundation of Hancock County
The Community Foundation of Hancock County is a nonprofit, public charity that promotes local philanthropy, convenes community initiatives, and supports nonprofit organizations.
Hancock County Tourism and Visitor Center
The Hancock County Tourism and Visitor Center promotes the cultural, historical, artistic and commercial amenities of Hancock County to increase tourism and visitation.
Hancock County Economic Development Council
The Hancock Economic Development Council prioritizes business education, and facilitates incentive opportunities, and provides workforce development assistance through partnerships.
Hancock County Chamber of Commerce
The Hancock County Chamber of Commerce is a pro-business influence in the community and provides numerous opportunities for members to make connections, share information, and learn best practices from their peers.
Libraries
There are two public libraries in Hancock County, which includes the Vernon Township Library and also the Hancock County Library located in Greenfield.
Mt. Vernon Optimist
Mt. Vernon Optimist offers recreational sports, academic scholarships and oratorical/written essay contests to the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation students.
Township Assistance
Both Vernon Township (317-485-7327) and Buck Creek Township (317-353-3570) support their residents in need with many services. Assistance is available for rent/mortgage, utilities, food, medical and burial needs, as well as household essentials like school supplies. See their websites for additional information.
