At the January 25 Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation Board of Trustees Meeting, Mr. John Vincent (“Vince”) Lidy was hired as the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Varsity Football Coach. Lidy will begin his employment on February 8 as a Physical Education Teacher, Varsity Football Coach, and Weight Training Coach. Since 2018, Lidy has been a MVHS Football Defensive Coordinator under the direction of Coach Mike Kirschner who recently resigned for a coaching position at his alma mater. In the last three years at Mt. Vernon, Lidy assisted the program’s achievements of a 30-8 record while winning a regional, a conference and two sectional championships.
Lidy has a commitment to bettering students in the classroom and on the field. He has been a teacher for 21 years and shared, “I am just as passionate about this profession as I was the day I started. I have been very proud of the work, success and commitment of those involved with the Mt. Vernon football program during my time as a coach. It is my goal to lead and develop a football program that provides a great teaching and learning experience for all those involved.”
As an Assistant Football Coach at Hamilton Southeastern Schools for 18 years, Lidy helped to compile a 141-60 record, securing seven Hoosier Crossroads Conference titles, two sectional championships, and earned a state runner-up title. He is the son of the 30-year Castle High School Varsity Football Coach and Hall of Fame Inductee, John Lidy, who is the 15th winningest coach in state history.
Lidy has a Master of Arts in Physical Education with an Emphasis in Coaching and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Indiana University. He has been a Physical and Health Education Teacher at Hamilton Southeastern High School since 2000, as well as an Online Physical Education Instructor for the Indiana Online Academy since 2014.
MVHS Principal Casey Dodd stated, “We are extremely excited to have Coach Lidy continue his journey with the Mt. Vernon football program as he moves into the head coaching role. His depth of football knowledge, years of valuable experience, and his boundless energy will all help to build on the successful culture that has been established within the football program over the past few years. We are also equally excited to have him join our teaching staff where his hard work and attention to detail will help guide our students to learn the importance of healthy lifestyles. We know he will continue to build a successful football reputation filled with impressive student-athletes and an engaging experience for our community.”
In the classroom, one of Lidy’s supervisors has described him as one of the hardest working teachers they have ever been around and referred to him as a “kid-magnet.” During his time at MVHS, he has demonstrated his work ethic, teaching commitment, energy, preparation, knowledge of the game, and above all else, his ability to connect with student-athletes.
MVHS Athletic Director Brandon Ecker, shared, “After reviewing over 45 applications, we have no doubt that Coach Lidy will lead the Marauder football program with integrity and class, and will assemble a great staff that will help cultivate our athletes into successful young men and women. With Coach Lidy, we get a loyal educator who is committed to helping our students find success in the classroom, on the field, and in life. We look forward to the future of Mt. Vernon football under the leadership of Coach Vince Lidy.”
The culture, discipline, and success of the MVHS football program grew substantially under Coach Kirschner’s reign and Coach Lidy has the commitment and loyalty to keep the ball moving forward. The sense of community that has been built around the Mt. Vernon football program will undoubtedly continue under the leadership of Coach Lidy. His integrity, character, and dedication to foster the success of MVHS students is innate to his pursuit of excellence.
