First Ever GenerationOn Indiana School District!

Administration Being Awarded A GenerationOn Banner

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is officially the first GenerationOn Indiana school district! MVCSC is taking great strides to provide the best opportunities possible for their students. One way MVCSC provides opportunities is by teaching the importance of giving back, specifically through community service. As a GenerationOn Indiana school district, MVCSC will help further these student driven philanthropic efforts.

To become a GenerationOn Indiana school district, MVCSC had to meet several qualifications.

  • Provide school training for both staff and administration

  • Register teachers and administrators with GenerationOn and Learning to Give

  • Register each school with a GenerationOn account to Bedtime Bags Service Projectutilize the online schools service-learning tracker to submit completed service-learning projects

  • Complete service-learning projects every year at each school

Each school at MVCSC has performed several service-learning projects. Fortville Elementary School created a community garden where students learned about the growth processes of plants. They worked in teams to keep the garden well maintained. The plants that are grown will then be donated to local food banks! Some students also painted stones with caring messages on them to add to their garden.

At McCordsville Elementary School, first and fifth grade students partnered together in a service project called Bedtime Bags. For this service project, they collected toothbrushes, soaps, and other necessities and then assembled their donations into bags that were delivered to children in homeless shelters!

Mt. Comfort Elementary School had a special guest come and help with their service project! A fourth degree black belt spoke to the children about how to prevent bullying. The students then created posters with positStudents Visiting the Senior Citizen Centerive messages on them about being kind to others, but that’s not all; a real ninja made an appearance to conclude their service project! He showed them what true confidence and respect looked like.

At Mt. Vernon Middle School, students learned about healthy heart habits and the basics of philanthropy. They then used their knowledge to work with essential skills students to teach them the benefits of living a healthy life and being active.

Students at Mt. Vernon High School were inspired by a lesson during class about LBJ and the Great Society. After their lesson, the students partnered with a local senior citizen center concluding the unit with a visit to the center delivering holiday greetings and christmas cards.  Other students at Mt. Vernon High School started a project to prevent bullying and teen suicide.

Students and staff at MVCSC have worked hard to create a positive environment and help the community through many service-learning projects. The district understands the importance of philanthropy and educating students about why it is so important to give your time, talent, and treasures to others.
