For the 10th year, McCordsville Elementary School participated in the WZPL Request-A-Thon for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The WZPL Request-A-Thon for the Make-a-Wish Foundation grants wishes for children in Indiana with life threatening diseases. Over the ten years MES has participated in this program, they have raised over $22,000!
This year, to raise money for the Request-A-Thon, MES participated in a fundraiser called Silverizing. Silverizing is similar to penny wars and is a game where students go around and put coins in different classes’ jars. Silver coins deduct points from a class and pennies add points to a class. The coins would be counted and the leading classes were posted on a total board in the main hallway. Kids rallied together to "bomb" the leading classes with silver coins because the class with the most money raised earned themselves a party of their choosing. This fundraiser lasted a month and with all their efforts, they raised $4,160 for the Make A Wish Foundation.
Because of their huge success with this fundraiser, members of the MES Pirate Leadership Council were able to visit the 99.5 WZPL studio and announce their school wide donation on air! While at the WZPL studio, they were also able to meet President and CEO of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Doug Kelley. In addition to meeting Doug Kelley, MES students also got to meet and grant a wish to Caleb who is a local Wish Kid. Caleb’s wish was to travel to Hawaii and swim with the turtles, and MES was able to make that happen.
McCordsville Elementary is setting a great example by making a difference in the lives of children with life threatening diseases. Mt. Vernon schools continually go above and beyond to help others in the community.
