Connecting HS & Preschool Students Through Technology

Connecting HS & Preschool Students Through Technology

How can high school students connect their academics with preschoolers? Through an app of course! The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Web Design students are creating a website hosting individual apps for preschoolers to use on iPads.  The individual preschooler's apps will feature their favorite color, letter and other items of interest, right after they click on their picture to open it.

Smiles were frequent in the busy lunchroom as the web design team showed their assigned preschooler different pictures, letters, and numbers for the young client to select.  MVHS students engaged the preschoolers with high fives and questions as they figured out their young client's favorites.

MVHS student Blake Miller shared, "it gives us experience in making something for a client.  A preschool client has similarities to other older clients as we still have to get their needs, code and build the website according to their wants.  Clients seldom know the details of coding websites so the age difference doesn't matter. The preschooler I worked with, Grayson, liked the number three, the color green, the letter G and Y, and his favorite animal is a whale.  We will use all of these when we build the website app with his picture on it."

The purpose is to learn how to create an app that the child will like.  The MVHS kids had fun showing the preschool "clients" how to spell their name, type letters, and even show them how a mouse works.  Currently there was enough MVHS students to offer this to two preschool classes.  The plan will be to eventually expand the opportunity for each child.

Ms. Bravard-Johnson, Instructor of the Web Design class said she was amazed with the smiles on her high school learners.  The MVHS Web Design class will be busy designing their "client's" personalized app in the coming weeks.

Ms. Brandi Delp, Mini-Marauder Preschool Teacher, said, "I was amazed at how good the high school kids were with the little kids.  Each child's app will have their picture on it and then when it is opened it will have the child's interests for them to play on."

MVCSC is connecting high school and preschool learning through the engagement of technology.  This personal web design opportunity connecting the two levels of students is only able to be implemented due to MVCSC being a 1:1 technology district.
