MVHS Class of 2016 Graduation

MVHS Class of 2016 Graduation

The Class of 2016's graduation went off without a hitch on May 27th.  There were 303 seniors, four juniors and three foreign exchange students who walked the stage to receive their diploma.  The graduates seemed ready to move on to their bright futures, prepared with one of the finest academic settings in the state.

The ceremony at the Mt. Vernon High School football field began the future of some very excited seniors.  Highlights of the evening included the band performing the prelude and national anthem as graduates filed in to their seats, followed by opening remarks by Mr. Derek Shelton, Assistant Principal.

The salutatory address was given by Brian Bozymski and the valedictory address was by Cassandra York.  The choir sang "You'll Be in My Heart" arranged by Mac Huff, and was dedicated it to the deceased classmates.  The band played "Heaven's Light" by Steven Reineke and "Black Granite" by James Hosay.  An empty chair in the band was filled with a vase of white flowers in honor of a fellow senior band member, Tristan Carson, who passed away the day before graduation.

Soon after Mr. Bernard Campbell, Principal of Mt. Vernon High School, addressed the Class of 2016 encouraging the seniors to make a difference, look to give back and to choose what is right.  Mr. Campbell then presented the Class of 2016 to Superintendent Dr. Shane Robbins, along with:
Mr. Greg Roach, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Sarah Weaver, Class Sponsor
Mrs. Jaime Wilson, Class Sponsor

The diploma of Savannah Castle who passed her sophomore year was presented to her parents, and the diploma of Tristan Carson was presented to his twin brother, Ian Carson.  Students wore gold ribbons and a "TC/SC" sticker on their caps in honor of the two students.

The top academic students in the class received their diplomas first, followed by the rest of their classmates in alphabetical order.

Mr. Campbell gave the final farewell, which was followed by the senior student class president presenting him with his own letter jacket with a representing "16" on the sleeve in honor of his retirement.

The choir closed the ceremonies before the recessional with "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" by Peter Lutkin.
