The Mt. Vernon Schools’ administrative team will incur an office change near the beginning of the school season. Preparations are underway at the “old” Fortville Elementary School building to accommodate the additional office space needed by the school’s administration.
The decision has been made to move to an area that can accommodate multiple uses due to the following reasons: the current office space offers only one conference room, the addition of two new team members, two dilapidated storage sheds and the current space does not allow for future growth.
The north side of the “old” Fortville Elementary currently houses the Hancock Madison Shelby Educational Services (HMSES) alternative schooling who rents the facility, therefore the heating/cooling system has been in use. The building is not able to be used as an elementary school again because there would be too many high-dollar renovations needed to provide students with the same opportunities as the other elementary schools. This justified the decision to renovate the facility as a multi-purpose facility that can be rented.
The administration staff will occupy the main/west entrance, and offices will be located primarily on the south half of the building. Additional ideas are being discussed for further uses of the building, including the relocation of the Mt. Vernon School pre-school program, the establishment of a transition program for 18-20 year-olds, as well as partnering organizations renting additional space. The current administration building will remain empty until a decision is made on its future.
