The 2015 Lilly Endowment Scholarship winner is Brieann Staker. The finalists for Mt. Vernon were Mark Alvarado & Staker. Both Staker & Alvarado were in a pool of eight eligible to receive the full four-year tuition scholarship award.
The eight finalists were interviewed in February by a volunteer committee identified by the Hancock County Community Foundation. The finalists have been submitted with their recommendation to the Lilly Endowment for approval.
Eligible applicants must be ranked in the top 15% of their graduating class and plan to pursue a four-year baccalaureate course of study at any accredited Indiana college/university.
Mark Alvarado plans to study Biological Sciences at IU in hopes of becoming a research biologist and lab director. He particularly wants to focus on molecular and cancer biology in order to run a cancer research lab. He is involved in many MVHS activities including National Honor Society (NHS), Marching Band, Science Olympiad, and Tennis among others.
Brieann Staker, one of two to win the 2015 Lilly Endowment Scholarship, plans to study Nursing at Anderson University or IUPUI with the goal of becoming a Physician's Assistant. Staker is also involved in many activities at MVHS: NHS, VOICE, Choir, Theatre, and Green Team are a few.
The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation congratulates both Alvarado and Staker on their accomplishments!
