MVCSC Hosts Million Meals Movement Event MVCSC Hosts Million Meals Movement Event

Student Council members from Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS), Fortville Elementary School (FES), and Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) worked together to host a Million Meals Movement at MVMS on Saturday, February 16th. Million Meals Movement is an organization that was created in 2007 with a two-fold vision- to feed the hungry and promote volunteerism. The Mt. Vernon community packed a total of 15,000 meals that will be distributed to central Indiana residents, making Mt. Vernon’s first district meal packing event a success!

MVMS Celebrates Black History Month MVMS Celebrates Black History Month

Mt. Vernon Middle School 8th Graders celebrated Black History Month in February with an annual live jazz concert featuring many genres, including blues, rock, R&B, and contemporary/pop. This private concert celebrating music performed by famous black Americans is always a big hit with the students. The band played music performed by Prince, Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lenny Kravitz, James Brown, among other notable black American musicians.

The community is welcome to join us for a free breakfast on Feb. 28th from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. at the Hancock County Promise Celebration! We will be celebrating the successes of the program and the impact it has had on our young students' lives. 

First MVHS Student to Seek Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Student of the Year Cam Cole - Junior Fundraising for LLS

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) junior, Cam Cole, is one of 23 students in Indiana fundraising in an effort to earn the title of Student of the Year through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) and the first student at MVHS to do so. The campaign began on January 24th and lasts seven weeks, ending on March 16th. Cam and his team, comprised of other Mt. Vernon students and parents, are aiming to raise $15,000 in donations to ultimately move closer to a cancer-free world.

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is welcoming a new medical assistant to the Activate Health Clinic, Ms. Caitlin Laughlin. The staff will enjoy her welcoming smile and friendly demeanor when visiting the clinic.

FES Students Simulate Sunrise Bakery Business FES Sunrise Bakery

Students in Mrs. Jessica Daugherty’s high ability class at Fortville Elementary School have been participating in a unique STEM project with Katey Kitterman from Sunrise Bakery. The students were assigned to create a bakery of their own- including a business model, recipe chart, and marketing techniques to help them learn about strategic planning.

Superintendent Dr. Parker's First Week at MVCSC Dr. Parker on Elementary Bus

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation’s new Superintendent, Dr. Jack Parker, started his mission of becoming familiar with the district by riding a bus with elementary students on his first day. Within his first week, he toured each of Mt. Vernon’s five schools and the preschool. Within the next six months, Dr. Parker plans to engage with staff and students at each of the schools, learn about Mt. Vernon, and connect with the community.

Taiwanese Group Visits Mt. Vernon Taiwan Group visits MVCSC

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) recently welcomed a group of three administrators and 13 elementary students from Taiwan. The group had the opportunity to experience several aspects of American culture, including education in a one-to-one environment (one computer device for each student/staff). The Taiwanese came to Mt. Vernon in hopes of learning more of the English language and immersing themselves in the daily schedule as a Mt. Vernon student/teacher.

FES Students Create "Town of Fortville" Project FES "Town of Fortville" Project

Fortville Elementary School (FES) fourth graders have used their STEM knowledge to create a replica of the Town of Fortville using graham crackers and other additional edible materials. This “Gingerbread Town of Fortville” gave five fourth-grade classes an opportunity to collectively create a replica. Each class was given a portion of the town to develop, and then pairs of students were assigned a specific building.

MVHS High-Tech Simulates FES Arcade MVHS High Tech Academy

The High-Tech Academy teacher at Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS), Mrs. Julie Bravard Johnson, has been instructing her students on how to make arcade machines in order to advance their initiative of learning more about the science of programming. A unique twist to this technology project was that it involved fifth graders to test their product.

Grandparents Day at MVCSC Fortville Elementary Grandparents Day

Fortville Elementary School held their second annual Grandparents Day on Friday, November 30th, 2018. Approximately 1,000 guests joined the celebration. The day consisted of students spending quality time with their loved ones while browsing the selection of books at the book fair and making crafts with their grandparents.

The School Board of Trustees at the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation has named Dr. Jack Parker as Superintendent. Dr. Parker will officially accept the Superintendency position at the December School Board meeting on December 17, 2018, and the start of his contract will be effective on January 7, 2019. The community is invited to attend a reception in his honor after the December 17 School Board meeting at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the Administrative Service Center, 1806 W. State Road 234, Fortville, IN 46040.

MVCSC Receives STEM Acceleration Grant MVCSC STEM Grant

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) was recently awarded with a K-6 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Acceleration Grant from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE).  In recent years, both the IDOE and MVCSC have focused on a multitude of efforts to increase the STEM initiative in schools. The IDOE awarded MVCSC nearly $50,000 to further advance STEM education in the elementary and middle schools.

MVMS Receives Unified Champions Honor MVMS Unified Champions Banner

Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS) is one of the six middle schools in the state to receive an award from Champions Together in the Middle for the 2017-18 school year. Champions Together in the Middle is a partnership between the Indiana Middle-Level Education Association and Special Olympics Indiana.

#GivingTuesday is November 29 and the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation (MVEF) offers a tax-exempt reason to make a gift that will impact the education at Mt. Vernon Schools.  Providing over $200,000 in teacher-requested grants since 2008, MVEF enriches the educational experience of students in our community.

MVCSC All Staff Breakfast - 7/29 at 8:30 a.m.

All MVCSC staff is asked to attend the Opening Day Breakfast on Friday, July 29 at 8:30 a.m.  It will be held in the Mt. Vernon High School Cafeteria, followed by mandatory annual training in the auditorium.  After the training, staff will be released to their respective buildings.

Join friends for an evening of fun, food & fellowship at the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation (MVEF)'s "Taste of Mt. Vernon" presented by Erlewein Mortuary on Thursday, March 3rd, 6:30-9 p.m. at Adaggio's.  Adults, enjoy food samples from local restaurants, libations and an endless silent auction.  Business casual attire is recommended.

Message from Administration -Fri's New Palestine Football Game

September 10, 2015 - The Mt. Vernon High School administration has been made aware of rumors through social media of potential violence at Friday’s football game at New Palestine High School.  We have been in communication with school administration at New Palestine throughout the day, and have been assured that local law enforcement has tracked down the root of the rumor and determined that there is no credible threat.  School personnel from both districts, in agreement with local police, have determined that it is safe to continue with our football game.

MVMS Students Inspired by World Language

Along with delayed starts and Chromebooks, there are other innovations occurring at MVHS this year. One of these new improvements includes an addition of a world language class for the eighth grade. This program teaches Spanish and French to better prepare students for foreign language classes they may have to take in high school.

First "Delayed Start Wednesday" was Successful

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation’s first "Delayed Start Wednesday" was deemed successful by both students and staff.  In each building, staff participated in professional development activities using Professional Learning Communities or better known as PLCs.  This learning initiative will allow MVCSC staff to engage in meaningful training to support both school and district improvement initiatives.

Lights, Camera, Action!  Mt. Vernon High School Students will Produce a Live, Pre-Game Football Show on August 21st!  Students involved in "MVTV Productions" at Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) will be hosting a live, 30-minute pre-game show before the home MVHS football game against Hamilton Heights.  The community is invited to come watch the pre-game show which is set to air at 6:15 p.m. before the game kick-off at 7 p.m.  

 

 

100% of Students in 4 AP Courses Passed the AP Test

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are among the most challenging courses a high-school student can take.  Four courses at Mt. Vernon High School can stake the claim of entire classroom success with all students passing the AP exam.  All students in Studio Art: 3-D Design Portfolio, Studio Art: 2-D Design Portfolio, Computer Science A, and Spanish Language and Culture received a passing score of three, four or five to achieve college credit.

MVCSC has Positive General Fund Balance-Thanks to Referendum Passing

When the Mt. Vernon community passed the referendum back in May 2014, no one guessed that Mt. Vernon Community Schools would have a positive General Fund balance in just over a year, which previously had a $3.6 million deficit.  

MVHS Students Receive Chromebooks

With a mixture of nervous and excited anticipation, Mt. Vernon seniors lined up out the door of the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) media center Friday, waiting instructions on receiving their brand new Dell Chromebooks.  Each student had their signed acceptable use policy and insurance agreement papers in hand, which was required prior to receiving the Chromebook.

MCE 5th Grader Running in Junior Olympics

A boy who loves to run.  William Moore-Oates fits that profile, only add competitive, hard-working, and successful.  Achieving more hardware in his 10 years than most, Moore-Oates is one of the few Indiana participants to run track & field in the Junior Olympics.

MV Opens Enrollment at All Schools with Updated Transfer Policy

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation has revised the transfer/open enrollment policy to allow additional transfer students for the 2015-2016 school year in all five schools.  The revised transfer/open enrollment policy states that Mt. Vernon Schools will accept students until building capacity is reached.  

MVCSC is Requesting Lawn Care Proposals

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is requesting lawn care proposals for management of all grounds. Interested parties must attend a mandatory site walk-through at 10 a.m. Monday, July 6th, and bids are due by 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 15th.

The Thank-an-Educator Program is an important part of Mt. Vernon Education Foundation (MVEF) and the work that we all do as a community.  Each holiday season, MVEF gives families an opportunity to thank their teachers, coaches and all school employees with a personalized certificate and a tax-deductible gift to the MVEF.  The MVEF has supported all Mt. Vernon staff and students by awarding over $200,000 in staff-requested grants since 2008. 

Published Author Leads Writing Workshop at MVHS Author of Ashfall Leads MVHS Workshop

Thanks to a grant from the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation, 19 Mt. Vernon High School students experienced a writing workshop from published author, Mike Mullin.  Mr. Mullin wrote the Ashfall trilogy and most recently published the book Surface Tension.  All students left the “funshop” with the start of their own novel.

MV Administration Moves to "Old" Fortville Elementary

The Mt. Vernon Schools’ administrative team will incur an office change near the beginning of the school season.  Preparations are underway at the “old” Fortville Elementary School building to accommodate the additional office space needed by the school’s administration. 

MVCSC Seeking School Board Attorney

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation Board of Education is seeking a new law firm or attorney to serve in the capacity of School Board Attorney.  The school's current attorney will be retiring June 30th after 34 years of service.  

Kindergarten Registration Dates for 2017-2018 Calling all kindergarteners

It's time for Kindergarten registration!  Visit any of the three elementary schools on the specific days listed below.  It is imperative to have all Kindergarten students register so the schools may prepare enough teachers to keep the class size low.  Registration can be done at ANY of the three sites for any of the three schools; just list what school you will be attending at registration.  MVCSC will have FULL day kindergarten only. 

 

 

MVHS Lilly Scholarship Finalists MVHS Lilly Scholarship Finalists

Each year, two students from Hancock County are carefully selected to receive a full-ride scholarship to any Indiana college through the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, which is administered by the Hancock County Community Foundation. Two students from each Hancock County high school in the top 15% of their class are chosen to be finalists for the scholarship. The finalists are accomplished and driven teens who set themselves apart from their peers with their philanthropic interests.  The two Mt. Vernon High School students chosen as 2018 Lilly Endowment Scholarship finalists are seniors Cade Gentry and Emma Walker.

Foundation Golf Outing Supports MV Schools

The June 19th Mt. Vernon Education Foundation (MVEF) "Joel Young Memorial Chip in Fore Kids Golf Outing" is primed for golfers to enjoy the day.  The golf outing is one of the main fundraisers for the organization, who has given nearly 100 grants to school staff totaling over $132,000.

Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam and Korean War Veterans Veteran Saluting to Flag

On Friday December 1st at 1p.m., the Mt. Vernon High School history classes are inviting the community to attend a Welcome Home ceremony for all Vietnam and Korean War Veterans! High school students struggle to understand why these veterans weren't welcomed home since they grew up in a post-9/11 era.  This event gives the veterans a welcome home that they should have received years ago, and also teaches students a lesson they won’t receive from a textbook.

Vaccine Clinic 4/20 for In-Coming Seniors & 6th Graders

On April 20, Mt. Vernon and the Hancock County Health Department (HCHD) will be offering a vaccine clinic for incoming seniors and 6th graders who are accompanied by a parent/guardian.  The vaccine clinic will be located at the Mt. Vernon High School from 3:45 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20.  HCHD will run the immunization charge through your insurance to make sure the shots are covered.  If your insurance doesn't cover immunizations or you don't have insurance, the shots will be FREE!

Local MVHS Band Member Featured in "Music for All" Video

Three MVHS band students enjoyed one of the top summer music camps in the country, "Music For All's Summer Symposium" at Ball State University. Katie Smith earned the lead trumpet spot in the marching band track and was featured in the Music for All's video.

Mt. Vernon Aviation Students Visit Indpls Airport & Simulation Lab Mt. Vernon Aviation Simulation

The students participating in the aviation classes at Mt. Vernon High School have already experienced more training at their age than most employed pilots.  These aviation students, comprised of students from Greenfield Central High School and Mt. Vernon High School, have flown with a pilot and also visited the Indianapolis Regional Airport where they saw the Indiana State Police’s planes and helicopters in their aviation hangar.  The students recently participated in a flight simulation training, as well as being among the select few admitted inside the Indianapolis International Airport’s control tower.

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation school board honored the 2015 retirees, school board scholars and academic wall of fame at the June 15th school board meeting.

MVCSC Visits Anshan, China MVCSC Educators in Anshan

Recently, a group of Mt. Vernon educators visited Anshan, China to exchange educational practices with schools in Anshan. MVCSC hopes to continue the partnership with Anshan schools and set up further student and teacher exchanges to advance Mt. Vernon’s International Exchange program.

Interested students in grades 6-12 are invited to participate in one 3-hour school-sponsored community service project (morning or afternoon) on our eLearning Day on Wednesday, September 20th.  This is purely voluntary, and students are still expected to complete all eLearning assignments for that day.

MV Brings Computer Devices to Students & Staff this Fall!

Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, all Mt. Vernon students and staff will be immersed in a technology-rich environment with individual computer devices.  The computer device will be an additional educational tool to engage students and increase student achievement.  This initiative will provide a blended learning environment, combining a digital curriculum and traditional textbook methods of instruction.  This will also allow the MVCSC District to utilize e-learning days for inclement weather thus eliminating the need for future make-up days.

Kindergarten Registration is April 9, 10 & 12 Calling All Kindergartners

It's time for Kindergarten Registration!  Visit any of the three elementary schools on April 9, 10 or 12.   It is imperative to have all Kindergarten students register so the schools may prepare enough teachers to keep the class size low.  Registration can be done at ANY of the three sites for any of the three schools; just list what school you will be attending at registration.  MVCSC will have FULL day kindergarten only.

It wasn’t long ago that the Mt. Vernon community lost a dear Mt. Comfort Elementary student, Matthew Clegg, at the age of seven.  Matthew passed away suddenly in May, 2016, but the community is keeping his spirit alive with a new playground at the McCordsville United Methodist Church, where his family attends.  Please mark your calendars to attend a fundraising dinner on February 10 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the McCordsville United Methodist Church  All proceeds from this dinner will help fund the new playground built as a tribute to Matthew Clegg.

MV Spirit Wear Offer - Ends Nov. 16 MVCSC Spiritwear

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) will now offer spirit wear to the community through November 16.  Consumers can order shirts, sweatshirts, golf shirts, car decals and stadium chairs before November 16 and the items will be delivered to the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Athletic Office in early December prior to winter break.  A percentage of each sale will benefit Mt. Two MVHS Education Professions Students Pass National Exam

Two students from Mt. Vernon High School have achieved their Pre-Professional Certification in Education Fundamentals from the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences’ organization. This accomplishment will give the students a head start in their pursuit of a career in education.

Vernon High School (MVHS) recently introduced a Makerspace room as yet another STEM infusion to benefit the high school students and staff.  A Makerspace is a collaborative work space providing a hands-on, creative way to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they engage in science, engineering, learning and exploring.

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) has partnered with the Fortville Entrepreneurship Initiative to offer a startup pitch competition for high school students and entrepreneurs in the community.  This startup pitch competition event is for high school students, nonprofits, and area startups with the goal to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in our community and provide a forum to share big ideas. Entrepreneur ideas pitched that night will be in part funded by the audience’s selection.

MS Rewards Readers with Messy "Read for Your Lives" Course

Approximately 80 sixth and seventh graders who read one million words this school year were challenged with a messy, muddy, and exciting obstacle course.  A video, pictures and details are in the article.  The cross country trail behind Mt. Vernon High School and Fortville Elementary School was turned into a 10-station “Read for Your Lives” challenge course for the afternoon.  Dana Hochstedler, Mt. Vernon Middle School Media Specialist, along with Tanya Lott, Media Assistant, kept track of students’ word counts through the year and also spent many hours organizing the challenge course for the students.

MVHS Students Visit Québec and Montreal Trip to Quebec and Montreal

Mt. Vernon High School recently sent a group of 6 students and 3 administrators to Québec and Montreal, Canada to experience French culture and utilize the French that the students have learned in school. Mt. Vernon has been pursuing trips similar to this one in order to advance the goal of expanding the district’s international program and immersing students into other cultures.

MV Relay for Life Teaches Character & Raises $32K+

Mt. Vernon Schools include character and good citizenship in the life lessons learned at school.  Giving back to the community is not just verbally taught but is learned by example.  Ashley Schenck, Event Lead for the Mt. Vernon Relay for Life and fifth grade teacher at McCordsville Elementary School, estimated that approximately 75% of the recent Relay for Life participants were Mt. Vernon staff, students, alumni or Mt. Vernon families.

This program has been used for the past two years, engaging leadership and teaching staff into defining what an effective modern teaching environment looks like in the classroom.

MVCSC Not Accepting New Out-of-District Students Through June, 2019 New home under construction

At the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation's Board of Trustees Meeting on October 1, 2018, a resolution was passed to not accept new transfer/out-of-district students. This resolution is effective October 1, 2018 through June 1, 2019 for students in preschool through grade 12. The Board of Trustees is passing this resolution due to the in-district housing growth that is impacting the Mt. Vernon schools.

Approximately 30 high schools in the state offer sign language classes, and Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) is proud to be among them teaching some fortunate students how to communicate with the Deaf.  This fall, MVHS began offering American Sign Language (ASL) I and II, with hopes that popularity will necessitate third and fourth level classes.

MVHS & MVMS Start Times Have Switched

Mt. Vernon High School and Mt. Vernon Middle School start times have switched for the 2016-2017 school year.  Beginning Monday, August 1, Mt. Vernon High School hours will be 8:25 a.m. - 3:20 p.m., and Mt. Vernon Middle School hours will be 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.  The two schools' hours have switched to help with both bus traffic and overflow of pick-up lines.  

MVHS's National Art Honor Society Wins “Rock the Chalk” Chalk Fest 2nd Year in a Row

The National Art Honor Society at MVHS has another claim to fame by winning the “Rock the Chalk” Chalk Fest in downtown Greenfield on Thursday, September 17th.  The competing groups had an overall theme of “Rock the Chalk” as they decorated the sidewalks around Greenfield City Hall.

The U.S. News & World Report rated Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) as #21 in the state out of 413 public schools, and #1,613 in the nation out of 21,150 public schools.

MVHS Academic Team Wins State Super Bowl

The Mt. Vernon High School Fine Arts Academic Team won the State Championship in Class 1.  The team qualified for state finals the past three years.

MVHS Introduces New Aviation Course Mt. Vernon High School's Aviation Course

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) recently became part of an elite group of approximately eight high schools in Indiana that offer a college aviation course.  MVHS began a collaboration with Ivy Tech Community College to implement an aviation course for juniors and seniors this 2018-2019 school year. The key coordinators who worked on putting this course into practice were the Director of Secondary Education Mr. Scott Shipley, Mt. Vernon High School Principal Mr. Greg Roach, Ivy Tech Aviation Program Chair Mr. Matt Medley, and the Ivy Tech Aviation Course Instructor Mr. Jack Morton.

The Mt. Vernon Technology Department would like to introduce our newest tech, JonMichael Weaver.  He will be working as the Mt. Comfort Elementary tech starting Jan 30, 2017.  He will oversee the technology needs of the staff and students at Mt. Comfort Elementary.  He is a recent graduate of University Missouri at St. Louis, and also a former Mt. Vernon graduate.

MCE Walk-A-Thon Raises Nearly $5K for Riley & Reading Teacher

Mt. Comfort Elementary hosted their annual Walk-a-thon on April 24th, sponsored by the parent teacher organization (PTO) and raised nearly $5,000. Half of the funds will go to Riley Hospital and half will support hiring a reading interventionist.   

Taiwanese Experience MVCSC & an American Education Taiwanese students play piano for FES students

Mt. Vernon recently welcomed a group of eight students and eight teachers from Taiwan. The group experienced American education and culture for two weeks, while simultaneously sharing their own culture with Mt. Vernon students and staff.  According to Chen Chun-Sheng, who is an elementary principal and was the leader of the group, they were impressed by the hospitality and warmth offered by the faculty, staff, and students at Mt. Vernon.

Superintendent Dr. Shane Robbins is inviting the community to join him for lunch during the "Soup with the Supe" days.  Community members can grab your own lunch on the second Thursday of specific months and enjoy an open-forum discussion.  Dr. Robbins will share an update of the status of Mt. The Kindergarten classes hosted a Mother's Day Tea Party at all elementaries.  Parents came in to enjoy the tea, punch, cookies and other festivities with their children.

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) Board of Trustees and the administration are pleased to announce a new partnership with Hancock Health, naming the Mt. Vernon High School turf field as the “Hancock Health Stadium.”  The community is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony just before the football game begins Friday, August 31 at 7:30 p.m.

MVMS Renovation Recommended by Feasibility Study & Board of School Trustees MS Students in Class

Over the years, the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) has experienced increased student enrollment.  With the construction of the elementary schools and renovation of the high school, the district is in pretty good shape, with one sticking point.  Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS), which currently houses grades 6-7, has not seen a great deal of renovation over the years.  The original construction was designed to hold three grade levels, however, as enrollment increased over the years, trying to do that posed quite a challenge and the district moved the composition to two grade levels.

MV Chooses to Withdraw from Special Education Interlocal

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) School Board unanimously approved Superintendent Dr. Shane Robbins the authority to issue a letter of intent to withdraw its membership from the Hancock Madison Shelby Education Services, otherwise known as HMSES.  HMSES is a special education interlocal that services school districts from three different counties in East Central Indiana and is the same special education interlocal that Greenfield-Central schools withdrew from beginning this school year.  HMSES provides a variety of special education programs and services.

MVHS Seniors Awarded Over $5.7 million

Mt. Vernon High School Senior Honor Night proved to be a record-setting scholarship night for hard-working seniors.  Over $5.7 million was distributed in scholarships to over 25 community-service minded and academically gifted seniors.

Retro Bill Visits Elementary Schools, Courtesy of D.A.R.E

All Mt. Vernon elementary students had an exciting visit by one of the most in demand speakers, Retro Bill, and his team of high school D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) representatives.  Retro Bill is the official international D.A.R.E. Safety Buddy and puts fun into safety, self-esteem and character counts education.  

MVHS Students Make Big Impact in Environment

In preparation for America Recycles Day on November 15, several Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students have already made a big impact in the environment with lessons learned in school.  MVHS Biology students in Mrs. Huth’s class have concluded a two week environmental unit yielding big results. As part of a project, students explored humans’ impact on the environment in ways such as deforestation, emission of greenhouse gasses, eutrophication of waterways caused by agricultural runoff, the accumulation of trash in oceans and landfills, and the colony collapse of a keystone species, the honeybee.

Seeking Kindergarten Parents to Receive Funds After Opening 529 Savings Accounts Hancock County Promise Logo

College may seem far away to kindergarteners, but Hancock County is bringing post-secondary education and careers front of mind for kindergarteners and their families through a collaborative effort called “The Promise.” The “Hancock County Promise” program makes educational savings a reality by helping families to start a CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings account through their school.  Current kindergarteners and those enrolling in kindergarten in the fall are eligible now to sign up for the “Hancock County Promise” and receive free funds that support their post-secondary education.  Parents/guardians can sign up at www.HancockCountyPromise.org.

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation has partnered with a company to provide a free bus app for parents/guardians.  This "Don't Miss the Bus" app will help parents/guardians send their child to the bus stop at exactly the right time, especially during inclement weather.

The all staff meeting on Friday, July 28 kicked off the start of a great year!  After breakfast, all staff went into the Mt. Vernon High School auditorium for a presentation.  New staff were introduced and welcomed to the MVCSC team.

FES Student Accepted into BSU's Gifted Math Summer Program Evie Skene picture

Evie Skene, a fifth grade student at Fortville Elementary School, has been accepted into the Ball State Institute for the Gifted in Mathematics (nicknamed "BIG M") one-week program in June.  Skene and 27 others will work in teams exploring connections between mathematics and science, number patterns and algebraic reasoning, and brainteasers of all kinds, as well as recreational activities.

MVHS & MVMS Student Government Receive Honors!

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) and Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS) have both received distinguished honors from the Indiana Association of Student Councils for their top-rated student governments.  Student leadership standards that councils must demonstrate include: communication, organization, managerial skills, citizenship, service learning, character, goal setting, group process, decision-making, self awareness, diversity, conflict resolution and business skills, 

MES & FES Students Win Awards in IN Jr Duck Stamp Contest

The annual Indiana Junior Duck Stamp Contest was held March 28 at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge with 106 entries this year. The Junior Duck Stamp Contest promotes learning about waterfowl and conservation by creating art. Hanna Walton, age 9, from Fortville Elementary won second place in the grades K-3 category. 

Mt. Vernon Educators Visit China Mt. Vernon Visits China

One of the goals of the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation has been to continue to improve the international program. In order to achieve this goal, a group of five staff members; Mrs. Heather Noesges, Mrs. Amy Tucker, Mrs. Nicole Privett, Mrs. Delinda Deckard, and Mrs. Stacy Muffler, took a twelve day trip to Anshan, China in hopes of enhancing the educational practices in China schools.

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation was recently awarded an energy efficiency improvement rebate from NineStar Connect.  The Power Moves Rebate Program offers rebates to NineStar Connect electric members for qualifying energy efficiency projects.  The Power Moves Program is offered in cooperation with NineStar Connect’s generation and transmission provider Wabash Valley Power Association.

IN Dept of Education Visits Mandarin Chinese Class at MVHS

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) was pleased to recently host Ms. Kathy McCarty, who is with the Outreach Division of School Improvement at the Indiana Department of Education. McCarty visited the Mandarin Chinese class to witness the unique Mandarin Chinese immersion students are receiving at MVHS.

MVCSC Names Greg Roach as MVHS Principal

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is pleased to announce Greg Roach as the incoming Mt. Vernon High School principal, effective July 1, 2016.  After a thorough statewide search with over 20 applicants, MVCSC Superintendent Dr. Shane Robbins made the recommendation to the School Board Monday, March 14th at their regularly scheduled board meeting.

MVHS Uses Technology & Innovation to Engage Students

Some lucky students at Mt. Vernon High School recently received a dream assignment: “develop an arcade game and convert it into an interactive computer program.”  The students in the Introduction to Computer Science class were instructed to create a cardboard arcade game and interface it with computer programs (Makey Makey and Scratch) that score and interact with the player.  The students were able to utilize their individual Google Chromebooks for this project.

Mt. Vernon High School is Four-Star School - Again!

The Indiana Department of Education announced Indiana's Four Star Schools for 2013-2014, which Mt. Vernon High School has earned three years in a row.

MVCSC School Board Scholars Honored School Board Scholars

The title of a School Board Scholar is awarded to students who earn an “A” or an “A+” in every class for the duration of the school year. The students must also be enrolled full time for at least 160 days and have grades for all four quarters of the school year.

MVMS Cheer Places 8th in National Cheer Competition MVMS Cheer Photo at Nationals

The Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS) Cheerleaders competed and placed eighth at the Orlando National High School Cheer Championships on February 11-12th. They competed in the “Time Out” division, which consists of a three minute game day routine. The “Time Out” division takes cheerleading back to what being a game day cheerleader is all about: cheering on the teams of our school and leading the crowd. They performed a cheer, an offense chant, and a band dance to Taylor Swift’s "Shake it off." The MVMS Cheerleaders advanced to finals after beating eight teams in semifinals and placed eighth overall in the National Finals.

MVCSC is Focused on Philanthropic Activities

Several Mt. Vernon Schools have focused on philanthropic or character-building activities the week of October 26.  Students had the opportunity to get involved by dressing up or wearing a certain color to represent each day’s charity or by making philanthropic donations.

MS Student Council Named "Honor Council" for 11th Time & Raised $1,952 for Riley Hospital

Mt. Vernon Middle School was recently named an "Honor Council" for the 11th time by the Indiana Association of Student Councils.  In April, the student council chaired Riley Days which raised $1,952 for Riley Hospital.

MVHS Band Has Near Perfect Scores at ISSMA

The MVHS band earned gold ratings from all three performance judges and from the sight-reading judge at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) High School Organizational Festival on Saturday, April 18th.  

First K-12 STEM Certified School District: MVCSC First K-12 STEM Certified School District

In partnership with the Indiana Department of Education, the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is pleased to announce that MVCSC is the first school district in Indiana to be STEM certified in all grades Kindergarten through Grade 12.  This confirmation follows IDOE’s announcement that all five MVCSC schools recently received the rigorous STEM certification, making MVCSC the only and first district in the state with this K-12 achievement.

MVMS Donates $1500 to Wounded Warriors with Josh Bleill Wounded Warrior Check Presentation

Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS) students received a motivational and fun afternoon as they prepared for the ISTEP test to take place.  The afternoon consisted of an inspirational speaker, Josh Bleill, a $1,500 check presentation to the Wounded Warriors, followed by an ISTEP pep rally with raffle giveaways and teacher vs. student games.

Support MVEF 5K/1M Race on Sat, Sept 24

The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation (MVEF) has awarded over 100 teacher-requested grants totaling over $150,000 to Mt. Vernon schools.  Come support MVEF by walking/running a mile with your family, or sign up for the 5K at the 5K/1M Family Fun Run sponsored by the Hancock Regional Hospital on Saturday, September 24.  The MVEF Race begins at the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) track, with the 5K beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the 1 Mile soon after.  

MV Schools Support Students During ISTEP

As students were preparing for ISTEP, Mt. Vernon staff was supporting students' efforts in a nurturing way while subduing any anxieties.  From cheering students in a hallway, to a lip dub video gone viral, to a supporting letter mailed to each student, Mt. Vernon staff let each child know how important they are.


 

MVHS Students Create Little Free Libraries for Each Elementary

Throughout a student’s school career they learn positive character traits of being kind to others, treating people with respect, and giving back to the community.  Students are taught to practice positive character traits daily, but how many actually make a choice to make a substantial impact in a community? Three Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students are supporting early childhood reading by creating a “Little Free Library” for each of the three Mt. Vernon elementary schools.  

MVHS Band Places 4th in State!

The "Band of Marauders" Marching Band earned 4th place at the ISSMA Marching Band Scholastic State Finals Saturday.  This is the second year in a row that the MVHS band advanced to the state finals.

New Security Measures Affect Visitors

After April 20th, anyone visiting Mt. Vernon schools or administration will have to be "buzzed in" by the front office to enter the buildings.  In addition, staff will have new photo ID cards which allow building access.

The Indiana Department of Education has released a list of schools recognized for the 2017 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Award. Mt. Vernon High School is the only Hancock County school to be a recipient of this award.

Inaugural Digital Safety Night was a Success Student Displaying Her Technology

Mt. Vernon's successful Digital Safety Night was kicked off with Superintendent Dr. Shane Robbins providing opening remarks about the importance of keeping students safe and learning about digital safety. He thanked the attendees for being there and the technology department for all their efforts every day to keep students safe. 

MVHS Web Developer Class Launches App for 5th Grade Students Student Showing their App

The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) High Tech Academy Web Developer class recently had an “app launch party” to present personalized apps created for their 5th grade clients. The MVHS web developer teams worked with 5th grade clients to create fraction themed websites that were customized to their client’s interests and met their expectations. The 5th graders enjoyed seeing their personalized app on launch day.  The group presentations included videos of client interviews, fraction games, and demonstrations of the app’s functionality.

MV Seniors Make a Difference on Work Day

Many Mt. Vernon High School Seniors made a difference throughout the community on Senior Work Day.  Each senior signed up to work from 9 a.m. - noon, and were divided into six locations performing various duties.  Their day of service was followed by a cookout with Superintendent Dr. Robbins and the administration team grilling at the track.  After lunch they picked up their cap/gown in preparation for graduation next week.

As Mt. Vernon students are getting accustomed to their blended learning environment and Delayed Start Wednesdays, let’s add just one more benefit to the 1:1 Initiative: eLearning Days. Old man winter can provide many negatives, but this year families at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) will experience a big positive with the weather challenges: learning will continue in spite of inclement weather.

The Mt. Vernon School Board recently approved a 2015-2018 strategic plan that addresses: 1-1 technology (one computer device to one student/staff), the intermediate program (grades 5-6), personnel and staff wages.

MES Student Recognized for 911 Call That Saved his Grandma's Life 7-year-old recognized for 911 call

McCordsville Elementary student, Joshua, was awarded with a certificate of recognition for his bravery and quick thinking by John Jokantas, Director of Communications for the county’s 911 office. Joshua was saluted by the county commissioners before getting a tour of the dispatch center and a ride with Sheriff Mike Shepherd. The best part of the day, for Joshua anyway, was a day off from school.

At the Mt. Comfort Airport, it won’t be long before a sea of American flags are honoring our service personnel.  Our partners at the Exchange Clubs of Hancock County and Lawrence will be posting 800-1,000 American flags to honor living or fallen Fire Personnel, Police Officers, Military and Veterans as a way to say, “thank you for your service!”  

MES Students Make Deals in "Shark Tank" Project Shark Tank Finalists

The four "Shark Tank" finalist groups fearlessly presented their innovative projects in front of their peers, staff and the "Sharks," which included Superintendent Dr. Robbins.  This year's McCordsville Elementary School (MES) "Shark Tank" finalists featured an all-in-one "Fuzzy Bunny" pillow and stuffed animal, a "Stow Bow" for girls wanting to carry small items without a purse, "LolliPups" edible treats for dogs, and "Animal Kits" which were full of supplies needed for new pets.  

MV Celebrates the Chinese New Year Chinese Opera Performers

On Monday, February 12, the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Asia Club hosted a Chinese New Year Celebration. Several MVHS Mandarin students entertained the audience with a variety of experiences, as well as an opera performance from two international Beijing opera singers.

MES Students Give to Children in Need Bedtime Bags Crew

The holidays are the perfect time to give to others and to help those who are less fortunate. This year, for the holidays, McCordsville took the wonderful opportunity to start a service project called Bedtime Bags. The first and fifth graders collected donations all through the month of December with their classes to fill up bags with toothbrushes, soaps, and other necessities that a child would need.

Mini-Marauder Preschool has a New Playground Preschool new playground

The Mini-Marauder Preschool received a new playground.  All preschool classes watched each stage of the construction, including tractors moving dirt and tearing down the old equipment.  Every day students monitored progress of the build, anticipating their new adventures ahead.  

MCE Hosts "Active Shooter" Drill with IN State Police

Mt. Comfort Elementary (MCE) recently hosted an "Active Shooter" drill for staff with the Indiana State Police (ISP) after school; (no students were present).  Several ISP officers presented information on many topics including: prior shooter incidents, profiling the perpetrator, early warning indicators, and how the police will react when there is an "Active Shooter" call.

Elem Grant & Imagination Library Have Commonality

What do new elementary playground equipment and early childhood literacy initiatives/Imagination Library have in common? The Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF)! In a recent Y-GIVE Grant, all three Mt. Vernon Elementary Schools will split a grant to go towards playground equipment and educational materials.  The four-square courts, hopscotch, clocks, a special needs swing and math games will collectively enhance the educational and recreational tools students use in the school setting.  These new assets will add some additional structural activity to the students’ recess.

Personal Fire Prevention Lessons for MES Students

Students at McCordsville Elementary School (MES) received up close and personal lessons of fire prevention the week of October 19th.  A four-man crew of McCordsville firemen visited each classroom and taught lessons on the importance of smoke alarms, what to do if they are caught in a fire, and the different ways to protect their selves during the fire.  

MVHS Fall Athletes Increased 20% w/no Pay-to-Participate

Fall athletic enrollment at Mt. Vernon High School has increased in every sport, thanks to athletes not having to “Pay-to-Participate” with the previous $225 fee per sport.  Fall sports’ total participation has increased 20 percent with 43 additional athletes.  

Pacers Cares Read to MCE Students

The MCE students had a special visit from Boomer and the Pacers Cares organization.  A former Pacer, policeman and friends from the IN State Teachers Association (ISTA) spent their valuable time reading to MCE students. 

3 Mt. Vernon Schools Receive "A's" from the IDOE
Three Mt. Vernon schools received "A" ratings from the Indiana Department of Education for the 2013 school year.  The "A" - "F" rating model is based on student performance standards.  Mt. Vernon High School, Fortville Elementary and Mt. Comfort Elementary all are proud of their "A" rating recognizing student growth.

The student standards that are part of the "grading" system include student academic growth and graduation rates, as well as college and career readiness as measures of success.

Starting with the 2011-12 academic year, the State Board of Education adopted the use of a new methodology for determining a school or corporation's grade, A-F.

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) recently hosted a convocation for all students about the harmful effects of vaping and drug use.  Every MVHS student listened to an informative presentation in the auditorium about the harmful effects of drugs, especially vaping and marijuana.

MVHS Lilly Scholarship Finalists Honored - Erlewein & Rush

The 2016 Mt. Vernon High School Lilly Endowment finalists were honored at the Mt. Vernon School Board Meeting on February 8.  Lily Erlewein and Aaron Rush were selected anonymously by a panel of Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF) judges.  Erlewein and Rush are exceptional representatives from Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) due to their multitude of accomplishments and plethora of community contributions.

NHS Raises $8,246.12 for Riley Hospital

The National Honor Society at Mt. Vernon High School raised $8,246.12 between "Penny Wars" and the "Dance Marathon" for Riley Hospital's Magic Castle Cart Program and the Palliative Care Program.

Mt. Vernon Seeks a New Superintendent

The Mt. Vernon School Board has completed extensive research with the community in preparation for a new superintendent.  Superintendent Dr. Riggs is scheduled to retire in June 2015.  The research process began in the fall by discussing with community stakeholders qualifications criteria for the new superintendent.  The Mt. Vernon School Board has enlisted the support of university doctorial advisors, several organizations, students and staff to collaborate on the incoming superintendent's profile.  The school board is grateful for the community's input which directed the final profile.

The superintendent profile highlights the experience, characteristics and skills needed for the new superintendent, with the new contract scheduled to begin July 2015.  Applications are accepted through February 13th, with interviews scheduled for March.  The ideal situation is to have the new superintendent work with Dr. Riggs a few months before he retires.  The superintendent vacancy announcement and and application are linked here.

Keian Gatewood has a slightly different hobby than most teenagers. While other 16-year-olds might be into sports or video games, Gatewood likes beekeeping. Yes, beekeeping, as in actually bees and the huge, white suits that look like they belong in a spaceship.

Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) with a new robotics team.  This elementary and middle school robotics team recently competed in a regional competition and won first place, which enters them in the state tournament in Fort Wayne.

Mt. Vernon Opens Onsite Healthcare Clinic for Staff Health Care Ribbon-Cutting

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) officially opened the new onsite health clinic for staff on Wednesday, November 30.  Kellie Freeman (MVCSC School Board of Trustees), Andrea Mayfield (Activate Nurse Practitioner), Nancy Strickland (Fortville-McCordsville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director), Shane Robbins (MVCSC Superintendent), Jason Vore (Activate Vice President of Practice Operations), and Brian Tomamichel (MVCSC Chief Financial Officer) officially cut the ribbon to open the staff health clinic.    

MVHS Band Receives 80 New Instruments, Tower, Accolades & Increased Membership

The Mt. Vernon High School Band (MVHS) received 80 new instruments and a 28’ platform observation tower from the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) Board of School Trustees. As a result of the band’s success and the school’s support, marching band membership has increased 53%, or 31 members since 2015.  The high school band program has increased 27%, or 21 members since 2015.  The MVHS band also earned an Indiana State School Music Association 2015-16 “All-Music Award” for its achievements for the 2015-2016 school year.

MVCSC Statement Re: Tristan Carson

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) community suffered a tragic loss on Thursday, May 26th as Mt. Vernon High School Senior, Tristan Carson, passed away unexpectedly.  Tristan was well-liked and held in high regards with his kind heart, friendly nature, and of course his love for his family.

MVHS English Department Earns $1,000 Grant English Class Visiting the IMA

Vernon High School English department recently earned a $1,000 grant that provides the school with the opportunity to offer high school students several activities connected with Frankenstein. Some of the activities include book discussions, young adult reading series, and horror and science fiction creative writing workshops.

FES Staff Saves Another Student's Life via Heimlich Maneuver Mrs. Privett & Micah

Believe it or not, Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation staff have saved yet another student's life from choking!  Another staff at Fortville Elementary School, Mrs. Nikki Privett, a  fifth grade  teacher, saved Micah Tsamwa's  life after choking on a piece of pizza.  

Freshman Kick-Off was a Dance-Filled Success

On July 27, incoming freshmen students filled the Mt. Vernon High School gym for "Freshman Kick-Off 2016".  The high school orientation featured student mentors, a.k.a. Marauder Mentors, who answered questions, gave advice and soothed the anxious underclassmen.

The Class of 2016's graduation went off without a hitch on May 27th.  There were 303 seniors, four juniors and three foreign exchange students who walked the stage to receive their diploma.  The graduates seemed ready to move on to their bright futures, prepared with one of the finest academic settings in the state.

Statement from MVCSC Re: Matthew Clegg

 

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is deeply saddened by the death of Mt. Comfort Elementary School 2nd Grader, Matthew Clegg, and expresses its deepest condolences to the family and school community. Matthew was greatly loved by everyone that knew him, was an excellent student and will be greatly missed by the community.

MVCSC Launches K-12 Summer School for Enrichment & Remediation

 

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) will host summer school for current grades Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Both remediation and enrichment will be provided in the content areas of reading, language arts and mathematics, as well as endless class options for high school credit.  

MVCSC Sets Immunization Deadline: Nov 28 Got your shots?

Indiana State Law requires all students attending school to have complete and satisfactory immunization records on file at school.  All sixth grade students are required to have a Tdap and meningitis vaccine, and twelfth grade students are required to have a second meningitis vaccine.  Letters were mailed the week of November 7 to parents whose children have incomplete immunization records.  The letter explained that as of November 28, 2016, the student will be excluded from school and the absence will remain unexcused until proper immunization documentation is received. 

MV's Nurse Saves Life &Teaches CPR to HS Students

Mt. Vernon's school nurse, Michelle Shaw, saved a life over spring break by performing CPR on a victim. Shaw teaches all high school students CPR training.

Vernon Community School Corporation hosted a legislative breakfast with Speaker Bosma, Senator Crider and Representative Cherry on the panel.  All Hancock County public schools' administration and board members were in attendance, along with representatives from South Madison and Shelby Eastern districts.

MV Elementary Students Gain a Love for Literature 5th Grade Student Reads to Kindergarten Student

Older students are now mentoring younger students at Mt. Comfort Elementary with their love of literature.  This new program, called Book Buddies, brings new learning opportunities for young students to create new relationships with older students. At Mt. Comfort Elementary, Principal Casey Dodd, 5th Grade Teacher Ashley Schenk, and Kindergarten Teacher Brianne Williams saw a great opportunity to connect classes through reading, mentoring, and inspiring a love of learning in both age groups.

Mt. Vernon Schools Rescue Food to Help Those in Need

The last two weeks of the school year, Fortville Elementary School’s student council piloted a food rescue program that will be launched district-wide in the fall of 2016.   Students place any packaged, unopened/untampered food in marked bins, which is then collected daily and donated to the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen in Greenfield.  Some of the foods collected were: milk, cheese sticks, yogurts, crackers, packaged fruits and vegetables.

MVMS Library Receives $4K Grant from Author James Patterson

The Mt. Vernon Middle School library received a $4,000 grant from bestselling author James Patterson to support school literacy initiatives.  The funds will be used to refurbish the nonfiction section, specifically biographies, sports/recreation and military topics.  The funding plans also include collaborating with language arts teachers on lessons that expose students to popular, current nonfiction books.

Wide-eyed students and inquisitive parents listened intently at the 1:1 Computer Device Initiative presentation led by Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation’s new Superintendent, Dr. Robbins.  The Mt. Vernon High School auditorium was respectably full with curious community members as they learned details about how their children will now be on the forefront of technology in education.  

MVHS Launches Online Radio Station

Mt. Vernon High School recently expanded its digital media lineup by adding an Internet radio station called Marauder Radio, accessed through the "MVTV News, Radio & High Tech" page on  MVHS's website.

Creating Climates of Inclusion- MV Unified Champion Special Olympics 2018 Unified Champions

All Mt. Vernon schools recently participated in the Unified Champion Special Olympics. The Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools brings together athletes with and without disabilities to train and compete on the same team. Unified Champions is an inclusive event designed for all Mt. Vernon students to participate regardless of athletic, intellectual, ambulatory or functional abilities. All of the Mt. Vernon schools participated in the Unified Champion Special Olympics on specified days where they competed at the track and participated in fun activities.

 

"Fight Like Ty" -MCE Supports Student Battling Leukemia Fight Like Ty Flyer

Mt. Comfort Elementary (MCE) and the Mt. Vernon community are supporting a student, Tyler, in his journey as he battles leukemia.  MCE classes collecting donations for Riley Hospital in Tyler's name.  The school is also hosting a Riley fundraiser in support of Tyler; students can fill out a Riley card for $1 that will be posted throughout the school.  A spirit week from January 22nd through January 26th will include fun dress up days such as Pajama Day, Hat Day, and a day where students will dress in all green (Tyler’s favorite color!)  Since Mr. Boudouris is Tyler’s favorite teacher, the class that raises the most money will have three students from that class help shave Mr. Boudouris’ head!

The Mt. Vernon High School History Classes recently hosted a welcome home ceremony for Korean and Vietnam veterans. Students lined the walls with welcome home signs and cheered for the veterans as they walked through the hallways.

 

Subzero Teaches MES 2nd Grade about Nitrogen Ice Cream Nitrogen Ice Cream Being Made

Subzero Nitrogen Ice Cream recently made Mt. Vernon's hands-on education even more enticing when it ended with a sample of their delicious ice cream!  The yummy science experiment showcased multiple concepts with liquid nitrogen, including condensation, evaporation, the ideal gas law, and water crystal structure.

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is becoming more of a global community every year. Just in the past two years, Mt. Vernon has made advancements by connecting with schools all over the world including China, Taiwan, Germany, Spain, and South Korea. Currently, a group of teachers from Anshan, China are at Mt. Vernon to learn more about MVCSC so that they can send their students to Mt. Vernon in the future.

MVHS Mandarin Class Sparks Interest in Elementary School Students Teaching Mandarin to Elementary School Studentsw

Fortville Elementary students recently had the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese through fun activities and games led by high school students. The Mt. Vernon High School Mandarin Chinese teacher, Miss Yi-Fan Lin, and Elementary School teacher Jessica Daugherty, saw a great opportunity to give their students an experience they may never forget. Miss Lin scheduled a day to take her class to Fortville Elementary School and use their Mandarin Chinese skills to teach younger kids about the language and culture.

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) celebrated the six retirees with a reception at the administrative service center on Sunday, May 21.  Current and former staff, their families and members of the community came together to honor the retirees for their dedication and contributions made to MVCSC.  Together, the six retirees have accumulated 130 years!

MVMS Reading Challenge - Gr. 6-8 Read 5,103 Books 1st Quarter 6th Grade Team Central Stars

Mt. Vernon Middle School challenged each student, team and grade level to read more books than they have before.  The result was astounding!  A combined 5,103 books were read by grades 6-8! 

MVHS Center Stage Performs at Carnegie Hall

Mt. Vernon High School's Center Stage Choir recently returned from performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  The Center Stage choir performed beautifully with nearly 275 other singers and were awarded the opportunity to work with Dr. Daniel Bara, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Georgia, and Dr. Deanna Joseph, Director of Choral Activities at Georgia State University. The students rehearsed for a total of 10 hours over the weekend.

MCE Staff & Students Unite with "One School, One Book"

As one of seven schools in Indiana participating in the “One School, One Book” program, every person at Mt. Comfort Elementary, including cafeteria workers, bus drivers, as well as all staff and students, received the same book and reading schedule at the kick-off.  All students and staff are reading "Lemonade Wars" by Jacqueline Davies at the same pace during February.

Brieann Staker was one of two students to be awarded the 2015 Lilly Endowment Scholarship. Mark Alvarado & Staker were in a pool of eight eligible to receive the full four-year tuition scholarship award.

MCE Students Learn About Influential Hoosiers MCE Wax Museum

Mt. Comfort Elementary hosted their annual wax museum at the end of the year, featuring students dressed up as a famous Hoosier and sharing a brief biography when requested.  Some of the famous people that students dressed up as were Michael Jackson, Orville Redenbacher, Colonel Sanders, the Wright Brothers, Florence Henderson, Tony Stewart, Jaycie Phelps, Little Turtle, and Benjamin Harrison just to name a few.

MVHS Teacher Lynette Huth Earns $12,000 Lilly Grant Lynette Huth

Mt. Vernon High School Science Teacher, Lynette Huth, was recently awarded a grant of $12,000 by Lilly Endowment Inc. through the 2018 Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program. The Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program is a program to help recognize and renew Indiana educators by helping them explore new interests for their classrooms and expand their mind to new ideas and creativity. This is the 31st year of the competitive program that rewards up to 100 educators with $12,000 each.

MES Students Raise Over $4,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation Students visit the WZPL studio

For the 10th year, McCordsville Elementary School participated in the WZPL Request-A-Thon for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The WZPL Request-A-Thon for the Make-a-Wish Foundation grants wishes for children in Indiana with life threatening diseases. Over the ten years MES has participated in this program, they have raised over $22,000!

Two outstanding Mt. Vernon High School Students, Matthew Rollo and Matthew Boyle, were chosen as finalists for the Lilly Endowment Scholarship in Hancock County. This scholarship awards the winner four years of tuition to an Indiana college of their choice. The winner is chosen based on academics, school involvement, and most importantly, community service.

MVHS Basketball Team Challenges Elem Students to Read MVHS Basketball Team

The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Boys Basketball Team is inspiring Mt. Vernon elementary students to read by offering a reading contest now through February 6.  Students that meet each weekly reading goal will earn free admission to a home basketball game, be introduced at the varsity game halftime and be encouraged to stay after the game for an ice cream party with the players and cheerleaders.  The following are the weekly reading goals: Kindergarteners - 75 minutes, Grades 1-2 - 100 minutes, and Grades 3-5 - 125 minutes.

The Class of 2018's graduation went off without a hitch on May 25.  There were approximately 309 students who walked across the stage to receive their diploma.  The graduates seemed ready to move on to their bright futures, prepared with one of the finest academic preparations in the state.

The High-Tech Academy is one of the keystone departments at Mt. Vernon High School where students receive hands-on and engaging skills.  Recently, Ethan Patrick and Blake Miller used their high-tech skills to develop an Amazon Alexa Powered Magic Mirror and demonstrated it at a school board meeting.  The skill they developed works with Amazon's "Alexa"  and has received thousands of downloads, as well as a few Amazon awards.

A dedicated group of Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students are inspiring their peers to drink more water, thanks to the new water bottle refilling stations they encouraged the district to purchase.  Their contagious passion for inspiring their peers to take healthy initiatives has resulted in a corporate partnership with Hancock Regional Hospital, who is providing water bottles for their new "Green Machine" club to sell.

MVCSC Launches Mini-Marauder Preschool on 8/1 - Only $125/Week

Mt. Comfort Elementary School passed out cards with the words “Pass it Forward” to each student.  The student’s mission was to do something kind for someone and leave the card behind, hopefully inspiring the person to do something kind for someone else.  The life skill students learn is that by doing something for others, the reward has a substantial personal impact through their benevolence.

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Mrs. Heather Noesges and Mr. Chris Smedley have been selected to serve as the Interim Co-Superintendents for the district.  Dr. William Carnes, a retired Superintendent from Whitley County Consolidated Schools and former Interim Superintendent at Hamilton Southeastern Schools, will also serve in an external, advisory capacity.

Vernon High School, the best way to become orientated is by having a dance off, touring the high school, playing fun games, and eating pizza. Students in the mentoring program taught the incoming freshmen all of the ropes and rules of high school while still having fun!

MES Teacher & Student Donate Hair for Cancer Patients Teacher & Student holding Hair

McCordsville Elementary School (MES) Teacher, Karen Feder, and her former student, Kalin Wallpe , recently cut 12 inches of their hair off during school for a good cause.  They donated their 12" ponytails to an organization called Wigs for Kids.  Feder raffled off the hair-cutting opportunity in the school fundraiser and Kalin joined forces.  

Six MVHS Students are Recognized by National Merit Scholarship Program Nathan Grandstaff Receives National Merit Scholar Semifinalist Award

Six members of the Mt. Vernon High School senior class of 2017 have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).  Nathan Grandstaff was recognized as a 2017 National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist.  Madeline Bovard, Bryce Gray, Elizabeth May, Kallan Ratekin, and Gavin Stamper have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.  

MVHS Celebrated Senior Honor Night with Over 50 Scholarship/Awards

Many students from the senior class of 2016 attended the Senior Honor Night to be recognized for their outstanding achievements.  Students’ names were announced with the college/university they plan to attend next year as they entered the stage.  The ceremony began with opening remarks from Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Principal Bernie Campbell and Student Government President Emily Fleming, followed by the presentation of awards/scholarships.

Multisensory Teaching is Proving Effective in Mt. Vernon Classrooms

When you enter fifth grade teacher Lauren Bailey’s classroom, it is not uncommon to see students sitting on large exercise balls, practicing math on their iPads, all while Mrs. Bailey reads them a novel.  This is education in the 21st Century; this holistic approach to education provides a physical outlet for students while activating core muscle groups and stimulating their cognitive skills. The physical stimulation enhances their motor skills, while the use of touch to complete math functions engages the left side of the brain, all while listening to a novel (impacting the right side of the brain).  This integration stimulates three of the five senses providing a comprehensive learning environment.

MV Schools Donate Over $1,000 to Imagination Library

All Mt. Vernon elementary schools and Mt. Vernon Middle School participated in "Penny Wars" during March to benefit the Imagination Library Fund.  Together they raised $1,075.62 to help with early childhood literacy through the Imagination Library Fund at the Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF).  The HCCF matched $ .50 for each $1 to bring the grand contribution to $1,613.42.  Heather Noesges (middle), Principal of Fortville Elementary School, presented the check with a few students to Mary Gibble (left), President of the Hancock County Community Foundation.

Google Expedition Takes MVHS to Rio de Janeiro

On Thursday, January 21, some lucky Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students were launched into a different dimension with 30-minute virtual reality field trips.  The Google Expedition Pioneer Program (GEPP) visited MVHS to transport students to exotic destinations through a simple tablet, cardboard viewer and a smart phone.  Expeditions is a new product that allows teachers to take their classes on virtual field trips, immersing students in experiences that bring abstract concepts to life while giving students a deeper understanding of the world beyond the classroom.  

MVHS Winter Guard Places 11th at State

The MVHS Varsity Winter Guard placed 11th in the State Finals.  This is the second time this year for band to reach state, as the marching band went to state finals earlier this year.

Vernon Education Foundation.  The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation sponsored a reception for students and their families to celebrate after the awards ceremony.

MVCSC Pursues STEM Initiatives & Certification FES Class shows their STEM projects

One goal of STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is to engage students in hands-on STEM concepts, entice the love of learning and possibly fuel their passion to pursue these fields.  The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) has heard the call loud and clear from STEM-related industries needing a larger workforce pool.  MVCSC has added three STEM teachers this year, is developing a “Makerspace” at the high school, and is pursuing becoming a STEM certified district from the IDOE.

MVHS "Rising Star" Juniors Recognized by the IASP 2017 Rising Star Juniors -MVHS

This year The Indiana Association of School Principals recognized the 2017 Rising Stars of Indiana. These are current juniors nominated by their high schools for their academic achievement. Mt. Vernon High School nominated the following top four juniors: Matthew Rollo, Zoe Jenkins, Annie Hermann and Olivia Spicer. 

MVHS Senior Selected to Perform in Rose Bowl Parade

Mt. Vernon High School Senior, Dana Sutherlin has received the prestigious honor of being selected to perform as a dancer in the Rose Bowl Parade as part of the 2017 America Honor Band.  The Music for All organization had hundreds of applicants across the nation for membership in the America Honor Band.  The Bands of America Honor Band is a 300 piece national ensemble with winds, percussion, as well as a flag and dance team.

Helicopter, Ambulances, Firetrucks at MVHS = "Operation Safe Prom"

How could ambulances, fire trucks, and a lifeline helicopter at Mt. Vernon High School be a positive thing?  The extraordinary experience of "Operation Safe Prom" taught all juniors and seniors at MVHS about the consequences of impaired driving, whether that be from drinking, phone distractions, radio or other distractions.  Students saw the aftermath of their peers who had been -in a mock setting- driving impaired and were in a fatal car crash.  One was life-lined, a couple walked away, one went in an ambulance, and one passed away at the scene in this mock setting.

MVMS Meets Blue's "Be the Best You Can Be" Challenge

Blue, the Indianapolis Colts mascot, visited Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS) at the beginning of the school year and challenged all students to "Be the Best You Can Be."  Through this challenge, MVMS demonstrated throughout the year how they 1) fuel up with healthy foods and are physically active 60 minutes a day 2) kicked bullying out of the school, and 3) how the students are being the best they can be in the classroom.   

MCE Student Collects 502 Blankets for Homeless

Those familiar with Mt. Vernon Schools know that philanthropic efforts are instilled in students beginning in elementary school. This year, eight year-old second grader, Hunter Lenk, has taken the initiative to collect 502 blankets for the homeless at Wheeler Mission in December.  In January, he personally delivered approximately 20 blankets to individual homeless people and the remaining blankets were donated to Wheeler Mission.

Mt. Vernon National Honor Society Raised $5,303 for Riley Hospital with Penny Wars – More Funds to Come with Riley Dance Marathon April 10th. Funds go towards "Magic Castle Cart" and "Palliative Care".
 

Mt. Vernon Expands the International Program International Visitors at Mt. Vernon

It has been an exciting spring full of worldly infusions at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC).  A total of 12 teachers from Taiwan and Germany and 22 students from Germany all traveled to Mt. Vernon recently as part of the MVCSC International Exchange program.  The program has now grown to include multiple visitors from Germany, Taiwan, China, Spain, and South Korea.

Hancock County Promise Inspires Kindergarteners at IUPUI Kids smile during the pep rally

IUPUI had some big dreamers visiting their campus on September 29!  As a part of the Hancock County Promise, nearly 1,000 kindergarteners flooded the IUPUI campus and was involved in activities that helped inspire their futures beyond high school.  This inaugural event was held at IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

MVMS's Walk-on-Water Science Project was a Success! Float Walking on water

The 8 Grade Academy's Walk-on-Water science experiment was a splashing success!  Over 70 teams competed in the project that challenged students to use their critical thinking skills.  The team had to build a float that would allow one member of their team to "walk" across the length of the pool.  The floats were not tested until the day of the challenge. 

MVCSC Recognized by the IDOE as a School of Promising Practice IDOE Promising Practices Award

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) has been recognized by the Indiana Department of Education as a school of Promising Practice in the area of International Exposure to Students.  MVCSC’s Promising Practice is one of 200 education or wrap-around service programs to be recognized by the Department in honor of Indiana’s bicentennial celebration.

Connecting HS & Preschool Students Through Technology

How can high school students connect their academics with preschoolers? Through an app of course! The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Web Design students are creating a website hosting individual apps for preschoolers to use on iPads.  The individual preschooler's apps will feature their favorite color, letter and other items of interest, right after they click on their picture to open it.  

MVMS Makes a Splash & Raises Over $2,400 for Riley Hospital

The Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS) raised $2,414.53 for Riley Hospital during “Riley Week.”  The week’s festivities included dress up days, dodge ball tournament, and homeroom fundraising competition sponsored by the Student Council.  Grades 6-8’s teams/classes challenged their students to raise a specified amount up to $500.  The school had an overall challenge of raising $2,000.  If they met their team/class goal, their teacher would jump in the pool in front of a student-filled audience.

Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is seeking bus drivers to fill immediate openings.  Bus drivers have the ability to shape the future by working with children to start and end their day.  MVCSC is looking for friendly and dedicated bus drivers to join the team who enjoy spending time with children.

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) has two staff members selected for the prestigious honor of becoming an AP reader.  Patricia Laughlin will read Spanish AP tests and Sarah Terrell will read AP Government tests for the second year.

FES Teacher Saves Student's Life with Heimlich Mrs. Hoeppner & Abram

At the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation, character and attentiveness are sought after when hiring, but seldom does the district know when they have employed a HERO!  At Fortville Elementary School, a third grade teacher is being applauded for her quick actions to save her student's life by performing the Heimlich maneuver.

MVCSC Students Advance in Optimist Oratorical Competition Optimist Oratorical Participants

The local Mt. Vernon Optimist Club held an oratorical contest with several Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) students participating.  The theme for this year's speech was "What the World Gains from Optimism."  The first place winners, Jennifer McGowen and Josh Ratliff, will advance to the district contest in Anderson.  District winners will then advance to a regional contest and national contest with an award of $15,000.

Mt. Vernon students are taught lessons on kindness, respect, compassion, and other character-building traits beginning in elementary school.  Several Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students demonstrated all of these as they supported their classmate, Ben Thompson, while he battled Lymphoma cancer his senior year at MVHS.  

MVHS is in Top 30 High Schools in Indiana for 3rd Yr in Row

The U.S. News & World Report ranked Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) as #28 in the state (out of 420 Indiana high schools) and #1,987 in the nation (out of 28,561 U.S. public high schools).  This is the third year in a row for MVHS to rank within the top 30 in Indiana.  The Marauders were one of 46 schools in Indiana that received a silver award.  See the full report linked here.  MVHS was the highest ranked high school in the county.

MVHS Student Tech Team Receives Hands-On Experience

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students interested in technology are now getting hands-on experience and a head-start in what could become their future career.  The new “MVHS Tech Team” comprised of six students, meet daily during SRT (student Resource Time) for 30 minutes to help the school technology department support MVHS students and staff with Chromebooks and Google Apps.  A secondary goal is to work on new technology projects, including creating new help desk documents to aid students/staff as they troubleshoot Google Apps.  

MVHS Youth Board Received Elementary School Grant Through HCCF

The Mt. Vernon High School Youth Board recently received a $1,000 grant to benefit the elementary school playgrounds. Both Fortville Elementary and Mt. Comfort Elementary will receive four-square courts, hopscotch, clocks and math games to enhance their educational and recreational tools.  McCordsville Elementary will receive a special needs swing.

How many high school students can claim they produced a television show that was actually broadcast on television?  Immersing and engaging students into real-life opportunities fits right into Mt. Vernon Schools’ goals: to provide academic excellence that prepares students to be successful in their future.

MES Raises $54,000+ for Technology

MES has raised over $54,000 in 18 months for the sole purpose of improving technology for the students and staff.  Several technology improvements have been made in the classrooms with funding through many resources including: grants, corporate contributions and old-fashioned fundraising.

Jakeb Henry Spreads Awareness for Mitochondrial Disease Jakeb at Walk on Water

Did you know a student in our Mt. Vernon family is fighting a challenging disease called Mitochondrial Disease?  He is stepping out of his quiet comfort zone to educate the community on his disease, while his peers fundraised to provide him with an experience of a lifetime.  The 8th grade students, the Mt. Vernon Middle School and High School staff, and friends/family members donated over $1,700 for Jakeb’s animal adventures!  Soon he will swim with the dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo and paint with animals.  The remaining money will be used to buy him books and give his family an annual membership to the Indiana State Museum, Eiteljorg or Indianapolis Zoo.

MES 2nd Grade Class Practices STEM Learning, Thanks to MVEF Three students hold hand-made robots

Trina Conover's second grade McCordsville Elementary School class enjoyed having Indy Art Lab teach students basic circuitry and an introduction to robotics. Thanks to a teacher-requested grant provided by the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation (MVEF), students learned about basic circuitry by investigating the parts that make up an electric toothbrush.

Welcome New MVEF Director, Renee Oldham

The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation (MVEF) has employed a new part-time executive director to bring a new vision and revival to the foundation.  Mrs. Renee Oldham comes to MVEF from the city of Richmond and brings much experience and energy to grow the foundation.

MVHS Raises Over $7,700 for Riley Hospital

The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) National Honor Society had already raised approximately $4,000 for Riley Hospital and added over $3,500 at the Riley Dance Marathon.  The National Honor Society (NHS) hosted the 6th Annual Riley Dance Marathon on Friday, April 8 in the MVHS gymnasium, and was open to all public after 3:30 p.m. for an admission charge of $5.  All proceeds went to Riley Children’s Hospitals. Attendees enjoyed not only dancing, but a giant bounce house, cake walk, face paint, food, and many other kids’ activities.

MV Begins Delayed Start Wednesdays on Aug 19th

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation will begin the delayed start program on Wednesday, August 19th and will continue every Wednesday throughout the school year in an effort to provide staff with frequent professional development.  This important initiative will allow MVCSC staff to engage in meaningful training to support school and district improvement. These important Professional Learning Communities (PLC) will ensure the MVCSC district remains on a path of continuous improvement.

Vernon Community School Corporation, Dr. Shane Robbins, stated “When I first arrived to the district I listened to our communities call for a greater amount of STEM education in our schools.  Our students and staff across all disciplines have embraced this initiative and we are excited to celebrate our achievements with everyone who has worked tirelessly to achieve this recognition.”

Vernon students chose to volunteer in the community and work on various service projects.  Mt. Vernon consistently teaches and offers student opportunities to help the community, while developing strong character traits and building citizenship in students.

MV Leads "Hancock County Promise" - 1,000 Kindergarteners Given Hope for Post-Secondary Education Hancock County Promise

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation led the county initiative to secure all Hancock County schools to collaborate and provide CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings accounts for all Hancock County kindergarteners.  We are proud to announce that Hancock County received a grant from the Promise Indiana organization to support the county in this initiative, beginning in the fall for the 2017-2018 school year.  This "Hancock County Promise" will impact approximately 1,000 kindergarteners each year, building hope for bright futures of a post-secondary education.  

FCCLA Chapter at MVHS Wins Big at State FCCLA Students

The Mt. Vernon High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter received the Gold Honor Chapter Award, 30/30 Membership Award, and Expand Your Horizons Award in state FCCLA events this year.  Receiving silver place medals in FCCLA Action Student Body was Olivia Spicer; Olivia’s program focused on healthy exercise programs for high school students. 

MES Raises $4,100+ for Make-A-Wish Foundation Make-A-Wish Donation

McCordsville Elementary School has once again raised thousands of dollars to benefit WZPL's Request-A-Thon for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This special foundation grants wishes for children in Indiana who have life threatening illnesses. Since 2008, McCordsville Elementary School has donated over $18,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation! 

Robots, Pancakes & Learning - MVHS Computer Science Covers It

The MVHS Tech Support Class, Programing Class, and Interactive Media Class all took a turn at the "PancakeBot" (TM) robot programing and technology troubleshooting.  The PancakeBot was created by a father trying to appease his toddler's wishes and is the world's first food printer capable of printing pancakes created by the user or premade designs.  

MV Pay-to-Participate Fees are Eliminated

If one listens closely, they should be able to hear the cheers from the homes of Mt. Vernon student athletes.  Beginning fall of 2015, Mt. Vernon Schools will no longer require the high school athletes to pay a $225 pay-to-participate fee and middle school students to pay the $100 fee.

Mt. Vernon Schools serves many amazing students, not only through academics, but also in teaching the importance of community service work and giving to others in need. One student, Hunter Lenk, has gone above and beyond to help homeless people in the community stay warm during the winter.

Camp Invention was an Inspiring Success! Two boys with inventions

Fortville Elementary School (FES) hosted the first Mt. Vernon Camp Invention this summer.  Many elementary students (kindergarten through grade 6) and camp counselors inspired students to create, engage and invent their desires.  During this high-energy week, students are involved in fun, hands-on challenges that encourage creative problem solving, teamwork, entrepreneurship and innovation.  New curriculum is introduced each year, inspired by the Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame!

Miller & Noesges Graduate from IPLI Mrs. Miller & Mrs. Noesges

McCordsville Elementary Principal, Mrs. Stephanie Miller, and Fortville Elementary Principal, Heather Noesges, have graduated from the Indiana Principal Leadership Institute (IPLI).  Housed at Indiana State University’s Bayh College of Education, IPLI is a two-year experience that addresses the professional needs of Indiana public school principals with an emphasis on student success. It was created with bipartisan support by the Indiana General Assembly in 2013.

Expanding Education Through STEAM Activities Fortville Arcade Game

The high ability math groups at all Mt. Vernon elementary schools particpated in the "Cardboard Challenge" and participated in the Imagination Foundation's Global Day of Play.  The event was centered around a cardboard challenge that promotes instruction and practice in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM).

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation’s Superintendent, Dr. Shane Robbins, recently graduated from the National Superintendent's Academy.  He was one of 32 school leaders from across the country invited to participate in the program.  The National Superintendent’s Academy was established to prepare school leaders with the tools to address the looming leadership deficit, and to provide a focused alternative or supplement to traditional superintendent training and certification programs.

Riley Dance Marathon is Fri, 4/28 at MVHS - NHS Students Raise Funds for Riley Hospital Riley Magic Castle Cart -Dance Marathon

Mt. Vernon High School’s National Honor Society (NHS) is sponsoring Riley Dance Marathon on Friday, April 28 with a goal of raising $10,000 for Riley Hospital.  With a $5 admission charge, Mt. Vernon High School students can attend the Riley Dance Marathon from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., and the public can attend from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.  If the community cannot attend and wants to support the fundraiser, visit THIS LINK.  Currently, the NHS organization has 53 members supporting this initiative.   

MCE Students "Pass It Forward" in Generous Measures Maggie makes stress balls

The Mt. Comfort Elementary School "Pass It Forward" campaign was deemed successful.  Prior to Mt. Luther King Day Mt. Comfort Elementary School passed out cards with the words “Pass it Forward” to each student.  The student’s mission was to do something kind for someone and leave the card behind, hopefully inspiring the person to do something kind for someone else.  Students learn that by doing something for others, the reward has a substantial personal impact through their benevolence.

MVHS Lilly Scholarship Finalists: Frost & Schleter Lilly Scholarship Finalists

The 2016-2017 Mt. Vernon High School Lilly Endowment finalists were honored at the Mt. Vernon School Board Meeting on November 21.  Emily Frost and Meg Schleter were selected anonymously by a panel of Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF) judges.  Frost and Schleter are exceptional representatives from Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) due to their multitude of accomplishments and plethora of community contributions.

MVCSC Not to Collect 3rd Year Referendum Tax

Through aggressive financial tactics, increased state funding, and a continued growth in student enrollment the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation can boast a positive General Fund cash balance.  It is for these reasons, the Board of School Trustees voted at their May 16, 2016 monthly board meeting to not collect the third and final year of the General Fund Referendum.

State Superintendent Ritz Visits McCordsville Elementary & Mt. Vernon Middle School

What do Glenda Ritz, entrepreneurship and sharks have in common? At McCordsville Elementary, State Superintendent Glenda Ritz is visiting the fourth grade simulation of “Shark Tank” on Friday, March 11th at 1:30 p.m. (visitation schedule is subject to change).  Student groups are currently busy presenting their entrepreneurship ideas to their classrooms, a few of which include: fruit and vegetable popsicles, hot hands (gloves with battery-operated warmers), fashion friend (a fathead picture of yourself on an easel where clothes are pinned on to provide a visual) and a robot that scans for people trespassing in school buildings, among many other unique ideas.

First Ever GenerationOn Indiana School District! Administration Being Awarded A GenerationOn Banner

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is officially the first GenerationOn Indiana school district! MVCSC is taking great strides to provide the best opportunities possible for their students. One way MVCSC provides opportunities is by teaching the importance of giving back, specifically through community service. As a GenerationOn Indiana school district, MVCSC will help further these student driven philanthropic efforts.

MV Students Safely Enjoyed the Eclipse Watching the Eclipse

At the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation, students at Fortville Elementary School made the "Day Turn into Night" PJ party all day.  Small groups of supervised students went outside with special ISO glasses to view the solar eclipse.  Students were monitored closely, and we even had some parent volunteers assist with the supervision. Students were truly in awe of the eclipse!

MCE Staff & Students Unite with "One School, One Book" Staff revealing the book

As one of twenty schools in Indiana participating in the “One School, One Book” program, every person at Mt. Comfort Elementary (MCE), including cafeteria workers, bus drivers, as well as all staff and students, received the same book "School Days According to Humphrey" by Betty G. Birney.  The books were purchased from funds raised through the Box Tops program.  Each book included a bookmark with the reading schedule at the kick-off. The “One School, One Book” convocation included a staff skit,complete with line dancing and the class pet, Humphrey, dancing in the spotlight.

MVCSC Launches International Exchange Program Welcome Taiwan Miaoli Delegates

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is launching a comprehensive International Exchange Program as part of the district’s effort to boost students’ global and intercultural awareness, curriculum engagement and potential future career opportunities.  Collaborations have begun with Anshan, China and Maioli County, Taiwan, with the goal to bring international students to Mt. Vernon Schools next year.  The initiative also includes a goal of sending MVCSC students and staff abroad.

DePauw University Speaks at MVHS about Environmental Sustainability

Mt. Vernon High School's biology, earth science, agriculture, and green team students were fortunate to hear a team from DePauw University present on environmental sustainability. The DePauw University Director of Sustainability, Anthony Baratta, brought students to Mt. Vernon High School and spoke on a DePauw's high school initiative: sustainability leadership education which is designed to spur even more hands-on, experimental learning projects in Midwest communities.

Brian Tomamichel, Chief Financial Officer for the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation was recently honored by the Association of School Business Officials International with its 2017 Pinnacle of Achievement Award for an innovative program that leveraged use of credit card rebates to fund a 1:1 program in the district.

MVCSC Brings International Exposure to Students Students wearing Taiwanese costumes

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is on a mission to expand students' world views and provide cross-culture experiences.  The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Mandarin Chinese Teacher, Yi-Fan Lin from Taiwan, recently offered a Chinese New Year celebration for students to engage in various Chinese activities.  Another recent international experience was having Yan Long, a visitor from China, share her Chinese culture with McCordsville Elementary School students.  

Mt. Vernon Honors Veterans Fortville Elementary School Veteran's Day

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation celebrated Veteran's Day at each of the five schools, honoring all those who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.  All three Mt. Vernon elementary schools and the middle school honored veterans with a convocation emphasizing the sacrifice veterans have made.  The convocations included patriotic songs and videos, moving speeches and videos.  Veterans in attendance greatly appreciated the recognition.

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation Receives IDOE Digital Learning Grant Digital Learning Grant Team

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) received a $75,000 Digital Learning Grant from the Indiana Department of Education to support two digital learning instructional coaches, eLearning professional development and computer device replacement.

Mock e-Learning Day was a Success! MVCSC Students Prepare for eLearning Days

In preparation for the unpredictable Indiana winter ahead, Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) students in grades K-8 participated in a mock eLearning day. An eLearning session is designed to provide instruction via technology that would have otherwise taken place in the classroom. MVCSC students and teachers are familiar with the use of technology in the classroom having implemented a 1:1 technology initiative last year.  In the event that MVCSC administration determined that winter weather had made the roads unsafe for travel, an eLearning day would be initiated. Through this mock session teachers and students were able to add a little fun to the process by wearing their pajamas while completing the day’s instruction.

Elem Students' Reading Enhanced by MVHS Basketball & Fortville Library

The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) boys’ basketball team recently made a positive impact with Mt. Vernon elementary students by giving them a reading challenge during January.  In addition, the Fortville Library partnered with the Fortville Elementary School High-Ability reading group to provide additional chapter books.

Schools Raise $5,000 for Foundation -Matched to $12,000

Each Mt. Vernon school raised $1,000 to meet the goal set by the Hancock County Community Foundation (HCCF) as challenge to county education foundations. The $5,000 was matched by HCCF for a $12,500 total donation to the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation.

School Board Honors Scholars & Wall of Fame President McCarty Speaking at Dinner Reception

At the June School Board of Trustees meeting, the School Board recognized students who have excelled in their academic careers during the year 2016-2017.  Before the meeting, the School Board Scholars and their families were treated to a dinner reception, prior to receiving their award.  The students who were recognized for their outstanding achievement in the "Academic Hall of Fame" were recognized during annual board meeting.  Congratulations to all these outstanding students for your work ethic, intelligence and determination to excel in academics!

MVHS Roembke Named to All-State Honor Band Andrew Roembke playing

Andrew Roembke, a member of the Mt. Vernon High School Band directed by Derek Ellinger, has been awarded participation in the Fifty-Seventh Annual Indiana All-State High School Band Festival sponsored by the Indiana Bandmasters Association (IBA).  This is Roembke's second year to participate in the All-State Band, and the first year to be selected for the All-State Honor Band.

MVCSC Launches External Bus Cameras, Here Comes the Bus App, as well as Wi-Fi on Buses Dr. Shane Robbins & Students by bus

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is launching several new features to the bus fleet, enhancing safety and cost savings.  New external bus cameras and a bus app that allows parents to see in real-time where the bus is will enhance the safety and security for Mt. Vernon students.  In addition, all buses will have wi-fi available for students to use during their ride by the end of this school year.

MVHS Adds a Mandarin Chinese Course Bringing Additional International Exposure to Students

 

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) is offering Mandarin Chinese to students this fall, bringing with it a Taiwanese teacher and direct exposure to the Chinese culture.  This program begins a new international partnership with the Ministry of Education in Taiwan and the Indiana Department of Education to MVHS.

The five "Shark Tank" finalists fearlessly presented their innovative projects in front of their peers, "Sharks", staff and Superintendent Dr. Robbins.  This year's McCordsville Elementary School (MES) "Shark Tank" finalists included: Glowin' Tee's, My Bear (handmade bear/doll), ENT Turbine (wind charger), Spinner Dinner (game enticing children to eat their dinner) and Doodle Caboodle (a fanny pack designed to help with dog walks).  Thanks to BMO Bank and "Shark" Jeff Hartley, all project designers received a $25 gift card, along with the school receiving a $500 gift card to further next year's "Shark Tank" program.

MVCSC Launches 529 College Accounts for Kindergarteners 2017-2018 Kindergarten Students Dressed as what they want to be grown up

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is implementing a culture that inspires young students in Hancock County to pursue a post-secondary education.  This fall, MVCSC and all Hancock County schools will be offering kindergarteners an opportunity to open their own 529 account, initially funded by community partners.  MVCSC’s Director of Special Programs, Scott Shipley, is coordinating the “Hancock County Promise” and seeking a grant through Promise Indiana to help fund the inspiring program.

MVCSC Expands International Exchange Program MVCSC Team with Anshan Bureau of Education

An administrative team from the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) expanded the International Exchange program to Anshan, China.  The MVCSC team signed agreements with two schools and the Anshan City Bureau of Education (which allows for exchanges with any school in Anshan, China), as well as developed relationships with the Anshan team.

MVMS 8GA is Rockin' Black History Month Band performing

Mt. Vernon Middle School 8th Graders celebrated Black History Month on Friday, February 3rd with an annual live concert featuring Principal Benjamin Williams on the drums and an all-star line up of local pro musicians. This event, for the 6th year in a row, is a part of the celebration of February's Black History Month.

MVCSC is a Unified Champion School District Middle school students at Walk on Water event

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is now a Unified Champion School District!  Join in the fun on the following field days: Preschool 5/10, Elementary 5/16, Middle School 5/17.  Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools is a program that engages schools in creating climates of inclusion, acceptance, respect and human dignity for ALL students.  It brings together athletes with and without disabilities to train and compete on the same team.

NHS Gives Back to Shelters & Orphanages

Mt. Vernon Middle School Honor Roll and Straight A students enjoy the perks of "Flying Aces!" Good grades enabled them a chance at winning prizes.

Veterans Honored with Mural

The Mt. Vernon High School National Art Society students honored United States Veterans with a mural in the high school. Several hours were spent designing and painting the details.

The Indiana Principal Leadership Institute (IPLI), created by the Indiana General Assembly, has featured Heather Whitaker and the 5th grade ISTEP+ success in their recently published Impact Overview.

Service with an Impact

The Outlook Christian Church, located in McCordsville, had one goal, one vision: help Mt. Vernon Schools. Several Mt. Vernon Schools received a much needed facelift in the fall, to help the outside of the schools respectably portray all the amazing development students and staff are accomplishing on the inside.  With budget cuts dictating that the schools’ exteriors fall last on the priority list, Outlook Christian Church stepped up with massive volunteer efforts to beautify the schools.
