In 1980, he graduated with a B.A. degree in Religion from Mid-America Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas. Now, he has lived in Fortville with his family since 2003. He has three grown children and four grandchildren.  His youngest child, Miriam, graduated from MVHS in 2005.

Several years ago, Mr. Edwards served on a tax committee for Mt. Vernon. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Trustees at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL; Vice-Chairman of the District Advisory Board of the Indianapolis District Church of the Nazarene; Vice-President of the Fortville Christians Unite (Ministerial Association); President of the Fortville-McCordsville Chamber of Commerce; and he is one of two Chaplains for the Fortville Police Department.

During his tenure on the MVCSC School Board of Trustees, Phil Edwards states that he plans to lend a listening ear and be a source of encouragement to all of the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation families.  "I look forward to helping give support, guidance, and leadership to the direction our school system is going in meeting the needs of our students, teachers, and administration."
