Mt. Vernon High School English teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Leavell, recently received a $2,500 grant from Forum Bank to purchase high interest books for her students. She was able to use the money from the grant to purchase 210 books- mostly novels, as well as a few nonfiction books. The Forum Foundation’s Educator Grants are offered to provide teacher materials for classroom projects and enhance student learning.
By having a more engaging selection of books to choose from, students in Ms. Leavell’s class will be more willing to read books that they would not otherwise read. Mrs. Leavell states, “Through interest surveys and countless conversations with our media specialist, I’ve been successful in connecting students with books they enjoy and are excited to read. It has been so rewarding to have students tell me that they look forward to coming to my class so they can read.”
One of Ms. Leavell’s goals this school year has been to inspire her students to foster their love for literature by providing books that they enjoy reading. Some of the more popular books Ms. Leavell ordered include The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, One Of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus, Turtles All the Way Down by John Green, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han, and Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. Ms. Leavell chose the books largely based on what books are in high demand in the media center at school. Her students tend to gravitate toward mystery, realistic fiction, and new fantasy novels.
The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation thanks Forum Credit Union for their support and for enhancing our students’ educational opportunities.
