Author Helen Frost Visits MVMS

Author Helen Frost at MVMS

On Friday, April 27, author Helen Frost came to the Mt. Vernon Middle School (MVMS) to discuss her poem Hidden as a way to celebrate National Poetry Month.

Helen Frost is a writer and poet from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her book Hidden received the Young Hoosier Book Award in 2013-2014. During her presentation at the middle school, Helen Frost spoke about her books, shared her research and writing processes, and answered questions from students.Helen Frost at MVMS

In preparation for her visit, 7th grade students read her award winning novel in verse book, Hidden, and created a classroom blackout poetry, a short novel in verse writings, and a stone project idea taken from a scene in the book.

Dana Hochstedler, Brianna Reeder, Adam Bisesi, and Melissa Blair were all part of the planning and organizing that made Helen Frost’s visit possible. Mt. Vernon Media Specialist, Dana Hochstedler, feels it is important to have authors like Helen Frost come talk to students.  She stated, “It is imperative that teachers learn and share similar strategies for teaching the skill of writing, especially when introducing poetry in the language arts curriculum.”

Helen Frost’s visit was very beneficial to the students at MVMS. It has helped them better understand and appreciate poetry as a literary art form, recognize the rhythms and codes of poetry, develop their own creativity,Helen Frost with MV Staff and enhance their writing skills. Helen Frost speaks to approximately ten schools every year and she was very impressed with how well prepared the Mt. Vernon students were. “Their questions were so insightful and the students truly knew the book Hidden,” Frost stated.

The Mt. Vernon Middle School would like to thank the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation for sponsoring this event.  This author visit was also made possible by money awarded from the Indiana Retired Teachers Association Active Teacher Grant and the McDonalds’ Grant.

For more ways to encourage reading and poetry, Mt. Vernon Middle Schools suggests students kick off their summer reading at the “Buy One, Get One Free” Scholastic Book Fair on May 7-15!
