Creating Climates of Inclusion- MV Unified Champion Special Olympics 2018

Unified Champions

All Mt. Vernon schools recently participated in the Unified Champion Special Olympics (See Photo Gallery HERE). The Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools brings together athletes with and without disabilities to train and compete on the same team. Unified Champions is an inclusive event designed for all Mt. Vernon students to participate regardless oUnified Champions- Preschoolf athletic, intellectual, ambulatory or functional abilities. All of the Mt. Vernon schools participated in the Unified Champion Special Olympics on specified days where they competed at the track and participated in fun activities.

 

The Mini-Marauder Preschool had their Unified Champions field day on Tuesday, May 15 and the three elementary schools had their field day on Monday, May 21. Students walked a lap around the track and then rotated through various, fun activities that were located in the middle of the track. Some of the activities included walking on balance beams, running in relay races, kicking the soccer ball, jumping over obstacles, and mUnified Champions- Elementaryore.

 

The middle school and high school participated in their own Special Olympics event later in the afternoon on May 15. It started off with a parade around the middle school, with all of the students lining the halls and cheering for all participants. The parade was followed by a lap around the track and fun games where the participants were awarded with ribbons. Relay races and throwing contests were some of the many fun activities that the students participated in. The event ended by awarding the Andrew Mize Unified ChampionUnified Champions- High Schools Participant of the Year Award, in honor of a Mt. Vernon student who passed away unexpectedly in April.  Two of Andrew’s close friends received the inaugural award this year.

 

MVCSC is proud to be a unified school and a participant of the Unified Champion Special Olympics! Mt. Vernon places the importance on creating climates of inclusion, acceptance, respect and human dignity for ALL students.
