The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is excited to announce that the Indiana Department of Education has designated all five schools in the district as STEM Certified schools.   The Superintendent at the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation, Dr. Shane Robbins, stated “When I first arrived at the district I listened to our communities call for a greater amount of STEM education in our schools.  Our students and staff across all disciplines have embraced this initiative and we are excited to celebrate our achievements with everyone who has worked tirelessly to achieve this recognition.”

The Indiana Department of Education has identified a great need for more rigorous and engaging science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, and in 2012 began the development of a statewide STEM education plan. The plan has been piloted and implemented in the 2014–2015 school year with the first round of IDOE STEM Certified School being awarded in the spring of 2015. The Indiana Department of Education released today a list of the most recent schools in Indiana to receive (STEM) certification. This brings the total number of Indiana STEM Certified Schools to 60.

“A quality education begins with amazing educators and excellent material,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction “Materials rooted in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics help prepare our students for a successful life beyond high school. I want to commend these schools for becoming STEM certified. We are grateful for their passion and dedication.”

The IDOE states that schools are chosen to receive certification based on their commitment to teaching the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math throughout the entire school. STEM Certified Schools exemplify a highly non-traditional approach to education, employing a great deal of inquiry, project based learning, community engagement, entrepreneurship, student centered classrooms, integration into humanities and related arts, and out of school STEM activities.  To become certified, each applicant went through a rigorous application and review process.

Congratulations to the MVCSC STEM Certified Schools
