IN Dept of Education Visits Mandarin Chinese Class at MVHS

Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) was pleased to recently host Ms. Kathy McCarty, who is with the Outreach Division of School Improvement at the Indiana Department of Education. McCarty visited the Mandarin Chinese class to witness the unique Mandarin Chinese immersion students are receiving at MVHS.

McCarty met with MVHS Principal, Mr. Greg Roach, prior to the classroom visit.  Roach shared how the partnership began with the Ministry of Education in Taiwan.  He also shared the vast educational experience of the new Mandarin Chinese Teacher, Ms. Yi-Fan Lin.  Lin previously taught English in Taiwan, as well as participated in a student exchange program where she attended the University of Missouri for five months.

During the classroom visit, Lin had the students singing in Chinese to two videos, practicing the challenging four tones in groups, completing worksheets, as well as using Chinese flashcards.  McCarty commented that many teachers could learn from Lin on how to engage students and provide effective teaching.

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is proud to be recognized by the Indiana Department of Education as a district providing unique educational opportunities for students, and appreciates McCarty's visit.
