The school board of Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) recently passed the 2015-2018 Strategic Plan which identifies not only goals and measurable objectives, but also specific development strategies for the next three years. These specific strategic initiatives establish priorities and continue the development for MVCSC, providing the students and staff with an updated and effective school system. A few noteworthy strategic initiatives in the finance department include: efforts to increase the salary and fringe benefits for all employee groups as much as revenue will allow, increase the Rainy Day Fund balance each year, and updating the financial software.
The safety/security area goals include continuing to upgrade security with call box “buzz-in” systems for visitors and staff photo ID “swipe cards” allowing access into the buildings. Other initiatives specify the addition of another Security Resource Officer and installing complete camera coverage at all the schools.
In the educational program area, the 1-1 devices plan (one computer device to one student/staff) is a large initiative. Other initiatives include adding 15 minutes to the elementary schedule, increasing art and music education, as well as adding keyboarding and a media specialist in all elementary schools. Another initiative indicates the high school will have two Advanced Placement (AP) electives added, and the middle school has an initiative to add World Language to its curriculum.
In the facilities area, development strategies include a complete plan for 1-1, as well as increasing band width & wi-fi coverage. Other improvements planned include replacing the high school gym sound system and the middle school cafeteria equipment. One of the biggest goals will be to review construction or renovation options necessary to restore the intermediate program of 5th – 6th grade.
In the personnel area, there are goals to add in the next three years including: high school athletic director, corporation curriculum director, transportation mechanic, software specialist, high school guidance secretary, elementary assistant principal, elementary social workers, middle school and high school Project Lead-the-Way teachers, and others.
The Mission Statement for the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is: Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation will engage, educate and empower today’s students to seize tomorrow’s opportunities. A vision statement was identified that ties the mission and objectives together.
