MVHS Basketball Team Challenges Elem Students to Read

MVHS Basketball Team

The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) Boys Basketball Team is inspiring Mt. Vernon elementary students to read by offering a reading contest now through February 6.  Students that meet each weekly reading goal will earn free admission to a home basketball game, be introduced at the varsity game halftime and be encouraged to stay after the game for an ice cream party with the players and cheerleaders.  The following are the weekly reading goals: Kindergarteners - 75 minutes, Grades 1-2 - 100 minutes, and Grades 3-5 - 125 minutes.

Last year, approximately 300 elementary students met their reading challenge and were recognized at a basketball game; many readers attended the ice cream party as well.  Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation anticipates an even greater turnout this year.  To give the elementary school readers their own spotlight, this year each school will be recognized at a different basketball game:

February 11 - MVHS vs. Lawrence Central HS - Mt. Comfort Elementary School readers will be recognized

February 21 - MVHS vs. Westfield HS - McCordsville Elementary School readers will be recognized

February 24 - MVHS vs. Yorktown HS - Fortville Elementary School readers will be recognized

Members of the MVHS Boys Basketball team created a video that was played for all three elementary schools.  The video inspires students to achieve the reading challenge while learning the importance of reading.  See the video below.
