Student Application of the MVHS International Academy

MVHS Mandarin Chinese Students & Teacher

The Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) International Academy is making its impact in students' lives, potentially changing their futures with a global influence. At the April Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation School Board of Trustees meeting, several Mandarin Chinese students spoke about the practical application of their international studies.  One of the student speakers was MVHS's exchange student from Taiwan.

Students shared that they are interacting with other English-speaking students at MVHS's sister school in Taiwan.  The MVHS students met at night to interact with the Taiwan students via video, as there is a 12-hour time difference.  Both the Taiwan and MVHS students have sent each other letters or packages to share their cultures.

The students focused their presentation on why international education is important in today's world.  Cultural literacy, possible international careers, and skills to interact with different cultures were a few of the reasons they cited.  The students went on a cultural field trip centered around food, and also spoke about a project they completed where they explored news in other parts of the world.  The students reported they have begun an Asia Club, and kicked off the club with a Chinese New Year Celebration and a ping pong tournament.

In the video below, hear from MVHS Senior, Maddy King, on how the influence of the International Academy has inspired her to become a global leader.  She has been accepted into Indiana University's Mandarin Chinese program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense.  The program expects students to reach professional-level proficiency in the Mandarin Chinese language.
