Curriculum & Grade Scale

Curriculum

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is a superior educational facility that provides a challenging curriculum for all students.  All students are provided with a computer device for educational instruction (K-5 receive an iPad, grades 6-12 have a Chromebook).  The curriculum prepares children for challenges and opportunities - both in and out of the classroom.  Mt. Vernon teachers strive to provide a positive educational experience that is tailored to meet students' evolving stages of cognitive development.

The following is MVCSC's standard curriculum through 8th Grade:

Reading - Journeys K-8
Math - Everyday Math K-5
Science - Indiana Science Essenials (McGraw Hill) 3-5
Writing - Writers Workshop K-5 (Smekens)
Handwriting - Zaner-Bloser K-3 / Handwriting Without Tears K-5
Social Studies - Timelinks (McGraw Hill) 1-5

Mt. Vernon High School offers a wide variety of classes that engage students' interests.

All MVCSC teachers meet or exceed the Indiana Department of Education's standards found here.

MVCSC uses NWEA Testing for grades 2-8. Students are tested for growth in the fall, winter and spring.  Teachers use NWEA scores to ascertain student abilities and levels of understanding.  This is one of the factors teachers use with student placement and curriculum planning.
