MV Lego Robotics Team Heads to State Tournament

MV Lego Robotics Team

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is an inspiring initiative that is growing at the Mt. Vernon ComEcho, the Robotmunity School Corporation (MVCSC) with a new robotics team.  This elementary and middle school robotics team recently competed in a regional competition and won first place, which enters them in the state tournament in Fort Wayne.

The state competition will be held on December 9th and the MVCSC team will compete against other schools throughout Indiana. The Mt. Vernon Education Foundation is sponsoring the team's state competition as it aligns with their strategic plan's initiatives.

The robotics team has seven members from Mt. Comfort Elementary School and Mt. Vernon Middle School, and is coached by Forrest and Brenda Gaston. Their team robot, named Echo, has a compact design which is made from a basic Core Robot Kit and has dog gears that allows for easy transitions between missions.

At the event, the judges will look for a balanced and strong performance from each team. In addition to performance, candidates must also score in the top 40% of all teams participating, complete all parts of the project, and adhere to all Core Values throughout the event and season.

The Core Values that each team has to follow are:

  • We are a team

  • We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.

  • We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.

  • We honor the spirit of friendly competition.

  • What we discover is more important than what we win.

  • We share our experiences with others.Competing with Lego Robots

  • We display Gracious Professionalism® and Cooperation® in everything we do.

  • We have FUN!

The project that the teams must complete includes the identification of a real world problem, the creation of an innovative solution, and sharing their research and solution with others. The problem that the MVCSC robotic team is trying to solve is how the water from storm drains flow directly into the nearest body of water. They went on a trip to the wastewater treatment plant, which gave them a better understanding of the human water cycle and microorganisms.

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation wishes the best of luck to the robotics team as they compete at state in December.  They will be a great representation of MVCSC’s outstanding STEM program!
