Superintendent Dr. Robbins Deployed to Support Hurricane Irma Victims

The Superintendent of the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC), Dr. Shane Robbins, has recently been notified he will be activated in support of disaster relief for Hurricane Irma.  His area of focus will be the medical evacuation for Florida patients affected by the hurricane’s devastation.  Due to his deployment, the scheduled community “Soup with the Supe” lunch on Thursday, September 14 will be cancelled.

In addition to being MVCSC's Superintendent, Dr. Robbins works for the Federal Coordinating Center (FCC) and is the Admin Chief for the FCC of Columbia, South Carolina.  His background includes significant training as a medical service core officer.  Dr. Robbins has served his country in the United States Army/Indiana National Guard since 1987.  He rose in rank as a Lieutenant Colonel and was the Education Officer and Chief of Operations during the “Operation Enduring Freedom” deployment to Afghanistan.  His team’s mission in Afghanistan was to train both secondary and post-secondary agriculture teachers/professors.

For the patients affected by Hurricane Irma, there are two levels of patient transfer requests for facilities.  The first level of medical requests goes through the Veterans Affairs (VA).  Once the VA is inundated, a request is then made to the Federal Defense, and Robbins' team may be activated.

Dr Robbins stated, “We will accept patients from Florida into Georgia, or if Georgia is not an option we will transfer them to South Carolina.  We will be located in South Carolina and coordinate patient transfers using military and civilian equipment. Every year we have an exercise with FEMA and the South Carolina Forestry Department, and we simulate mass patient movement. So now we will be enacting the plans.”

Robbins also stated, “This is a unique opportunity that I have to serve.  I will be able to communicate closely through technology with my talented Mt. Vernon staff, and feel confident projects will move forward while I am in South Carolina for the next week or so.”

Dr. Robbins’ deployment is part of the National Disaster Medical System, which is the federally coordinated health care system and partnership of the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Defense, and Veterans Affairs.
