Mt. Vernon Named as Common Sense Media District

Common Sense Media District Badge

Mt. Vernon recently earned the recognition of being a Common Sense media district. This publicly demonstrates that Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is dedicated to providing safe, trustworthy information regarding the Internet, technology, and media to those living in the community.  Parents can use the “Common Sense Media” resource through the “Forms & Resources” webpage under the “Parents” tab.

Part of the process of becoming a certified district was educating parents on safe internet activity. The district hosted a night where the prosecuting attorney and local law enforcement educated parents on the consequences of unwise digital choices. In addition, they also shared programs that parents can use to monitor and manage their child’s digital presence.

Common Sense media is a nonprofit organization that provides unbiased information to parents, students, and teachers regarding technology and media. The main focus of the organization is to allow students to empower themselves through media and technology and use it in a positive, effective way.

In today’s society, the effect that the digital world has on the youth cannot be ignored. Children use upwards of 50 hours of screen time each week, so it only makes sense that the content they consume has a profound impact on their lives as a whole.

Ms. Misty Hall and Mr. Joseph Anderson have been the main coordinators in achieving this “Common Sense District” title for Mt. Vernon Schools. Many teachers facilitated these digital safety lessons in the classrooms as well. Lessons regarding a healthy online presence were implemented throughout the year, with the majority of them being taught during “Digital Citizenship Week.”

The most important aspect of being a Common Sense media district is that it creates a roadmap for healthy digital culture. As a bonus, the certification helps the district maintain federal E-rate funding. Congratulations to all the Mt. Vernon schools that put so much time and effort into creating a digital safety environment!
