MVHS Lilly Scholarship Finalists

Matthew Rollo and Matthew Boyle are Lilly Scholarship Finalists

Two outstanding Mt. Vernon High School Students, Matthew Rollo and Matthew Boyle, were chosen as finalists for the Lilly Endowment Scholarship in Hancock County. This scholarship awards the winner four years of tuition to an Indiana college of their choice. The winner is chosen based on academics, school involvement, and most importantly, community service.

Over 60 applicants applied and two finalists were selected from each high school in Hancock County. Each participant had to be in the top 15% of their class and show exceptional participation in community service activities. After the two finalists from each Hancock County high school were chosen, they went through an interview process for the panel to learn about them and their community service.

Matthew Rollo is ranked first in his class at MVHS and is invMatthew Rollo with his Familyolved in band, Fine Arts Academic Team, French Club, National Honor Society, Social Studies Academic Team, and the World Language Spring Celebration Steering Committee. Matthew volunteers with the Beadle Bunch Relay for Life Team in a variety of capacities. He serves food, bakes desserts, and cleans dishes at the annual Turkey Noodle Dinner and Soup Supper, each of which hosts up to 1,000 people each time. The benefits go to the American Cancer Society, which uses the money for cancer research.

"Working on the Relay for Life, I have learned several life skills that I wouldn't have necessarily learned in school.  Being a super-academic-type personality, that has been particularly helpful," said Rollo. “More importantly, I enjoy seeing the smiles of people who eat at the turkey dinner, knowing that I am supporting the fight to end cancer.”

Matthew Boyle is ranked number 15 in his class and is involved in National Honor Society, Student Government, Baseball, Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl, Mentoring, Best Buddies, DARE, Spirit Club, IHSAA LeaderMatthew Boyle Helping People get Glassesship Conference, Hancock County Youth Leadership Council, Congressional Leadership Academy, and HHC Athletic Conference. Boyle worked with MVCSC, Ossip Optometry, and the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen to get their visitors eye glasses. Using a Mt. Vernon school bus, he transported the Soup Kitchen visitors to Ossip Optometry in Greenwood for free eye exams and glasses.

“I want to make the Soup Kitchen visitors’ days better, because they deserve to be treated the same. They are people like you and me, only because of some unfortunate event or random circumstance, they are struggling to find a place to live or eat,” Boyle stated.

The winner of the Lilly Endowment Scholarship will be chosen in December and MVCSC wishes the best of luck to Matthew Rollo and Matthew Boyle. The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is proud to have such amazing students who go above and beyond to help those in need.
